Anime suggestions for kids
    #3415394 - 11/27/04 11:44 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

OK. So we have Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Totoro and we've seen Castle in the Sky.  What are some other not-too-violent or sexual anime movies that are wonderful for kids?  I think the above mentioned are leagues above Disney or any other current American stuff.  Thanks for any suggestions!

Have you seen any of the other Ghibli films? Kiki's Delivery Service, Nausicaa and Porco Rosso are all great movies for kids IMHO. I'm drawing a blank on non-Ghibli choices though.

The above is an extract from my fictional novel, "The random postings of Edame".

In the beginning was the word. And man could not handle the word, and the hearing of the word, and he asked God to take away his ears so that he might live in peace without having to hear words which might upset his equinamity or corrupt the unblemished purity of his conscience.

And God, hearing this desperate plea from His creation, wrinkled His mighty brow for a moment and then leaned down toward man, beckoning that he should come close so as to hear all that was about to be revealed to him.

"Fuck you," He whispered, and frowned upon the pathetic supplicant before retreating to His heavens.

no sex or violence where's the fun in that?

Akira and Ghost in The Shell are two other excellent movies but they do contain some violence. I can't remember any scenes worse than heads being chopped off by arrows like in Princess Mononoke. GITS has brief nudity in the very begining but it's not sexual. I'd suggest you watch them first (they're good) then you making the choice as to wheter they are apporiate.

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.---senior doobie

I love Cat Soup. Not sure if its something kids would enjoy though. There's no dialog and the whole thing is set up like a dream sequence. Its only thirty minutes long and has some mild violence, but no more so than Princess Mononoke.

the following are serials with OAV, movie, and episodic elements that are genarally acceptable for most children and still entertaining enough for adults, many of which have spinoffs and dichomatic offshoots
Lupin III
Slayers
Dragonball
Tenchi Myuo
Inu Yasha
Macross
Hellsing- violent, but not too bad, easily dismissed as fake gore.
Ranma -contains nudity, but it's not exessive anough to be considered pornographic.

i ant think of any others right now.

yes dragonball........

it's evil. i watched one episode once. since then i can't stop watching it. it's friggin addicting i tells ya. you want to know what happens next episode and there are always these weird twists you dont see coming. god damn.

i wish i could see the original japanese ones with subtitles tho. american ones they made hella long and drawn out.

vegeta yells at goku. goku yells at vegeta. /cut to gohan talking to videl and hercule about something. something happens. commercial. cut to goku and vegeta yelling some more. talk about shit. something else happens. commercial. end of the episode they turn super saiyan and then start fighting so you have to watch the next episode. for fucks sake.

Thats true about DBZ.  Altho its a rather cheap anime, it draws you in.  Anyway, i've heard that the subtitled japanese UNCUT version is not so .... lame.  But thats expected, as with all other anime.

Since when is princess mononoke not violent?  Ah well, i wouldnt worry about it.  Used to watch Terminator 2 when i was about 8.

The original OVA Tenchi Muyo series is alright. The TV show sucked, and all the ones that came after that (Tenchi Muyo in Tokyo i beleive) sucked also.  The original OVA is 13 episodes if i remember correctly.
