Some relatively promising news
the impaired driving legislation is being handled independent of legalization so any delays on that front will not impact the other and Senate has apparently agreed to vote on the bill to send back with amendments on June 7th in order to be implemented before Summer break
http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/ Story also has a link-through to statements made by Trudeau that reinforce the summer sentiment also apparently shot taken at provincial attempts to block growing

So the Senate heavily amended the bill and sent it back;
the government is rejecting some key amendments now it comes down to which side caves or how long this drags out http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/

Quebec actually passed laws yesterday to regulate legal weed which the Feds still haven't made legal yet. Rather odd, but at least the are prepared lol

HA! hope it passes. I say just make it all comletely legal and put no sanctions/BS on it whatsoever and completely forget about ANY regulations for home or business.
![]() Forget ANYTHING legal and just forget it was ever controlled or illegal in any way. It's a fucking plant for Pete's sake! Drop ANY control of any kind at all and make it completely legal to buy, sell, trade grow whatever with it.

Senate has passed the bill, so full implementation of nation-wide legality should be roughly 8-12 weeks

Found a fairly concise outline of the provincial plans to have shops open on or around October 17th

Manitoba is gearing up to run headfirst into collision with Federal rules on growing
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/m This does not likely impact me due to medical authorization to grow but there could be an interesting legal battle shaping up for someone in the province it is discouraging to see the PCs moving against anything that empowers the individual citizen rather than megacorp cannabis tho but suppose it is to be expected with the park ban, looks like there will still be something to gather for on 4/20 2019 and beyond ![]()

Things are looking kinda fucked in Ontario too, the new PC government cancelled the government-run stores to stick it to the Liberals I guess. Eventually there's supposed to be privately run stores, which would be great if it was happening on Oct 17. No smoking anywhere but private residences either I think, not sure if that's new. I wonder if vaporizing counts as smoking.

There has been a lot of push against this in the medical cannabis wing in order to facilitate patients vaporizing in areas where smoking would not be feasible but pretty sure there is going to be some butting of heads--there is also a sentiment against non-cannabis vapes in public as well am trying to motivate myself to get my driver's license finally, but may never be able to legally drive either would likely test positive on a roadside even without consuming within the 2 hour window they seem to be working with and all of this is without the edible rules in place which will be really interesting, with pressure to have things like cannabis pastry shops also going to have to stop in at Winnipeg's vape lounges and see if they will still be open or if they got screwed over on regulations somehow

I've heard that The Second Cup coffee chain wants to get into cannabis retail in some fashion. Not sure if they would be selling coffee too at those locations or what.

Apparently we're facing issues with filling jobs
https://www.ctvnews.ca/business/ Wonder if McGill would let me come back and get a degree in cannabis growing, did enough of it during my time there

Honestly, I think the conservatives are a lot smarter with their plan. Yes privatization won't happen until 2019, but the government of Ontario is now focusing on mail order instead of brick and mortar shops, and that will kick off come October. Since a lot of people get their weed through the mail anyways I think it's a decent move. Maybe they would be better off opening some brick and mortar shops as well, but really without turning to privatization I don't think they would be able to open enough stores anyways. The liberals idea was pretty shitty, they weren't going to be able to open nearly enough stores in time and were giving the monopoly to the LCBO. The native reservation near me has 29 "grey area" dispensaries in a 2 kilometre radius. The nearest city is Belleville with a population of ~50K. The liberal government was going to put one single store in Kingston, an hour away, to start. 29 dispensaries service Belleville and the surrounding area right now and are flourishing. Kingston and Belleville together is over 150,000 people and they had plans to build one single store for this whole area. Even if the Liberals eventually added enough stores, they would be competing heavily with the grey market until they were able to construct enough shops. The conservatives privatization plan will work out better I think. If I can still buy my weed from the grey/black market for 25-50% less though I will be doing that. https://lfpress.com/opinion/colu
I think no matter what, the grey market will still thrive. All in all the federal bill already sucks, and the provincial regulations added on top are just going to make it a shit show. As for the no smoking in public places, it's a bit ridiculous. If you're camping in a provincial park you can smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol, right? But no pot? Good luck with that.

I'm in favor of ditching the govt monopoly aspect, but IMO there is no good reason for them not to just open the planned govt stores anyway alongside the mail service. Then we would at least have some legal physical stores at launch instead of zero.

Yeah, you're right... that would be ideal. The liberals had put some of it in motion too, they were starting to prepare some of the locations, so the conservatives are just throwing money down the drain by scrapping the idea altogether. And not everyone will want to get pot through the mail, so they are basically causing those people to turn to breaking the law.
I'm curious to see what the regulations and requirements will be for opening a privatized shop. I don't understand provinces that are going to forbid growing your own. What a shit show that will cause. I would be pissed if I lived in Manitoba and was forced to purchase my weed while people in other provinces can grow their own. The provinces shouldn't be able to decide that. I imagine there will be some lengthy court battles over it

In codifying hyprocrisy news,
Police in various jurisdictions will be allowed to toke on their own free time so far, the first exception to this will be the Calgary Police with a total ban
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/c if my bitterness toward cops is put aside, this gives me a possible small degree of hope in terms of potentially having more open-minded law enforcement officers it may be more difficult for me to resent a cop who did not become a cop until after the change and kind of interests me in terms of what the makeup of police forces may or may not look like a generation from now there could be no change as well, due to the 'type' of people currently inclined to pursue law enforcement careers

Apparently the prospect of cannabis delivery services is already pushing into grey area in Manitoba
and we're still over a week away from it being legal in any capacity ![]() https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/m
Cannabis delivery seems totally reasonable to me; remember that the depanneurs in Montréal did booze delivery and it was considered a net positive for the community because it kept drunks in their house rather than wandering the street to buy more

I'm not super comfortable with the prospect of cannabis purchases creating a paper trail with the government.
