Vinyl Records.

Been thinking about getting a record player and some vinyl records for awhile now. Anyone in the same boat? I feel it is a good investment.

hobby, yes. investment, also yes (if you buy rare, collectible albums). i say go for it! you can find a lot of awesome, original records on ebay. i paid like $15 for a Harry Nilsson vinyl lot and they sound incredible!

plus it is also fun to bid on items on ebay. once i was bidding against someone for a collection of rare gg allin albums and singles.. im still butthurt i didnt win that one..

I have a few cool things on vinyl (old school rap, Motown, reggae/dub etc) but I don't actively buy records any more. Too much money. It would probably be fun to be a DJ though.

Its pretty fun but its expensive.

But its worth getting into if your an audiofile aka u like high quality audio.

I collect records.  I love it, but I can tell you that it’s not a great investment.  Right now records are at like a 25 year  popularity spike.  It’s like buying gold when it’s never been more expensive.  I only buy records of music that I love, and every time I spend 30$ or so on an album, I think about how someday, after I’m gone, it’s gonna be in a huge bin at Goodwill for 99 cents.

That said, if you’re into records for their own sake, this is the best time to buy in decades.  A ton of absolutely amazing stuff is getting released, or re-released.  Great music, awesome package design and artwork.  If you like playing records, this is a good time to get into it because of all the options.

The only way a small collector is going to make money off record investments right now is to get to know the music well, get to know the labels and distro well, and use that info to predict how artificial scarcity will drive up the price of a record in the very short term.  For example, say you pay attention to the releases of a label, maybe Mondo in this example.  You see that they’re going to release a limited run version of, say, the ‘Suspiria’ soundtrack.  You know there’s a bunch of hardcore horror vinyl fans who love this music, and Mondo is only releasing 500 copies of it.  You “camp” on the Momdo website so you can grab 2 copies (the usual max allowed) as soon as they go up for sale.  They sell out in the first hour, and you have two of them that you payed 120$ for.  You then take those copies and sell them on the secondary market (eBay, discogs, etc) for 100$ apiece, netting you an 80$ profit.  And the example I used is kind of a best case scenario; things can go wrong when flipping vinyl, where you might not make that much money.  It’s a fair amount of work, for not a whole lot of cash.

But yeah, if you just like chillin at home, listening to your favorite songs on vinyl, it’s a great time to get into it.

Collecting vinyl is definitely cool but expensive.

My friend was over the other day telling me about a guy he jams with who is straight up addicted to vinyl :lol: he spends all his time and money sifting through records, and is like a hoarder of vinyl :uhoh:

I'd highly recommend checking out lossless vinyl rips, good way to collect quality audio in a convenient format. Only downside is the space lossless audio takes up, but it can be worth it.

Soulseek is amazing for vinyl rips, I was looking at Pink Floyd vinyl rips the other day and found some old Quadrophonic recordings up! Would be really cool to listen to with a surround sound system :awesomenod:

Seems dumb. You could have MP3s or FLACs that take up no space and are usually free. Digital all the way!
I guess if you have a bunch of money you need to waste then it would be good.

I have a small collection. And unless you have a really good setup with proper towers and an “ear for music” you’re wasting your money.

I was just thinking it would be cool to get a set up for ripping vinyl, then you could buy vinyl rip it and sell it or keep it stored for later.

How accurate are 3D printers? You could scan your record and 3D print it, then sell the original for cash.

Looks like it is possible: https://www.instructables.com/id/3D-Printed-Record/

Low audio quality in that case but it's probably possible to get higher quality with fancier printers.

i'm a collector. inherited it from my dad who has a record store and one of the coolest collections i've ever seen. i only have about 300 or 400 but i love em all. super expensive hobby though, and definitely not an investment. do it if you're passionate about the sound of vinyl and the concept of having physical copies of your favorite albums. there's a feeling to it that you just don't get with digital, and i'm a big digital music head too. i have over 400gb of music on my laptop. vinyl is awesome.

The people I see associated with vinyl are either emo hipsters that carry around mechanical typewriters or d-bag audiophiles professing that you need to spend $600 on a power cord to optimize sound quality. Neither are groups I want to be associated with. IMO any moderate increase in sound quality is lost in the static and pops that will inevitably develop in a vinyl press. There's a reason we moved past it.
