P. Mexicana "jalisco" sclerotia. I Need some help
    #14930700 -

Hi. I am planning on starting my first ever grow, and I think that growing sclerotia would be easiest for me, as i do not have much time to spend on working a fruiting chamber. I want to use p. Mexicana jalisco spores, does that strain produce good stones? Also, i was thinking about using some rye berries spawn bags ( pre sterilized) from out-grow. Would that be a good substrate for the sclerotia? And lastly, is 3 months a long enough wait, or should i go longer untill i harvest?

Ah Jalisco....I have to suggest that you get an ATL7 print from Sporeworks.

ATL7 is a much easier species to grow in my opinion. (my Jalisco tribulations
have been historic)

Three months is long enough.  The longer you wait, the stronger the stones will be.

You can also get fruits too:

Good luck,

P. mexicana/A and P. galindoi are far superior to P. mexicana/Jalisco.

There are none.

It's just an inferior sclerotia producer, with decent fruiting abilities.

Ok, so ATL7 syringes from sporeworks, injected into severeral sterile bags of rye berries and set for 3 months should yeild results. Thanks everybody!

So, anybody got any suggestions as to where to get good rye berry bags? I have no experience with buying this sort of stuff, so any insight is appreciated.

Stonesun blazed this trail for me.  I have only been repeating what
he learned and shared.  ATL7 == stone where Jalisco == frustration
(but that is only me...I will get Jalisco, and soon maybe as I may
finally have some strong spawn)

Good luck,

Do you have a PC?

I would use azurestandard.com to get the berries, and madseason.com to get the bags.

As to pre-made bags, I have never used one, but a sponsor would be a good way to start.

Good luck,

JD

Do you think a premade jar (sterilized too) of rye berries then thrown in a steamer for an hour (to kill what the company couldnt) would be fine? And no, i dont have a pressure cooker, thats why i would do the steam sterilizing thing.

Just buy pre-sterilized bags from a vendor.  They wont contam unless you fuck up.  Test the syringe on a small jar that you order as well to make sure syringe you buy is good.

This morning I got some new DNA sequencing results back which finally solve the taxonomic mystery around these species.

In May someone found Psilocybe tampanensis in Florida, the first time it's been found there since it was discovered in 1977.  The sequence matches perfectly with a wild P. atlantis collection that I sequenced a month ago, putting into place the last piece needed to solve this puzzle.

I now have quite a few sequences from this group, and they all fall into two groups - The USA ones all match, and are 5 bases different from the Mexican sequences which also all match.

Both species are common in truffle cultivation, with P. atlantis forming much larger sclerotia than P. mexicana.

The caps look different - P. atlantis is lighter in color and more convex, while P. mexicana is darker, more striate and more campanulate.

Since P. tampanensis was published in 1978 and P. atlantis in 2003, the correct name for the southeastern P. mexicana-like species with large sclerotia is P. tampanensis.

Psilocybe galindoi is a synonym of P. mexicana, however what is being cultivated under the name P. galindoi is P. tampanensis.  P. mexicana/A is also probably P. tampanensis, while the Jalisco strain really did come from Jalisco and is P. mexicana.

So just to be clear.

There is a difference between mexicana and tampanensis but tampanensis and galindoi/atlantis are definitely the same?

Psilocybe galindoi was described from Jalisco, near Colima.  I've been to the type location and there is P. mexicana everywhere.  Also microscopically it matches P. mexicana.  So P. galindoi is surely P. mexicana.

However what we have been cultivating under the name P. galindoi was collected in Georgia and is P. tampanensis.

I have sequenced quite a few truffles from many sources and my conclusion is that there are two species - the ones that make large truffles are P. tampanensis and the ones that make small truffles are P. mexicana.
