can not sleep *READ*
    #2519420 - 04/02/04 03:32 PM (20 years, 1 day ago)

I am starting to loose my mind. I havent slept for 3 days, with only 1 hour naps each day. I havent been taking any substances or anything like that. I just have a chattering mind and cant sleep.

What are your peoples sleeping methods when you cant sleep?

Thanks for your time to read this.

Please someone help ASAP. I was thinking about going to a doctor and taking some benzos. Because im tarting to feel strange after stying up so long, even if I did have an hours nap each night.

I have some insomnia too, although not as bad as yours. Usually I doze off at about 4 am every night.  Recently I have been trying to focus on my breathing, and it has made a big difference.  Taking long, deep, slow breaths while you're laying in bed helps.  Also, cut all caffeine and nicotine out of your diet. Rigorous excercise during the day will make sleeping easier at night as well.  If all else fails: masturbate.

I suffer from insomnia from time to time... the last bout I suffered was when I went through a lot of emotional problems with an ex-girlfriend... I laid awake all night long for 3 days just thinking about our situation. I found that reading a lot when I couldn't sleep didnt really help, but diverted my mind from the topic that caused me to stay awake. Also meditation and yoga helped me to finally fall asleep.... best of luck to you... insomnia sucks so much!!! hope you feel better soon.

Just for moments like these I stay up. Its really messed up.

Well ive been up for 3 days, when does your mind start to get damaged?

I heard 5 days.

Because early man used to go out on hunts and be out for days (3-7).

Am I hurting myself?

i suggest you get some valerian root from like a health food store or something try and get the actual valerian if possible. If they dont have the plant form, get some capsules and take a few or brew the plant with a teabag. (either the leaf like stuff or the stem like stuff)...let it set for like 20 minutes too. then also get some melatonin.. take like 8mg.

valerian tea is pretty nasty, so your going to want to sweeten it with honey (not sugar).. valerian will make your body really really tired. it doesn't help your mind go to sleep, but when you wake up, you are really refreshed. I've woke up in the middle of the night and almost couldnt move cause i was so tired... The melatonin helps put your mind to rest... basicaly, when your eyes are closed, it keeps your mind from working... dont really work unless your trying to sleep.

with this combo, you will have one of the best nights sleep of your life... dont do it too often, cause i've heard that the valerian can build up in your liver.

I don't like to bring up drugs, (well, not really  ,) but have you tried smoking pot a half hour or so before you go to bed? After the high wears down and I feel burned out, it's much easier to go to sleep IME. I always used to drift off when I was high, and it might calm your mind a bit to help with the insomnia. Though if it does persist and good old marijuana doesn't help I would definitely go to the doctor and check out getting some valium or such.

someone told me that valium is a derivative of valerian. i dont know how true it is but it sure does enhance your sleep 10X...

Hm, well, it will hurt your brain after a while, but I've stayed up for days and it only turned me  partially braindead.  :crazy2:

I saw a show on sleep deprivation once, it was crazy, had real stories about people who had stayed up for long periods of time. One army guy was captured by the Chinese and as a form of torture they wouldn't let him sleep for about 10 days I think. He was saved, but when he went back he was never the same. He would always be violent and get mood swings and eventually lost his wife because of it.

Another guy one day couldn't get to sleep... and the next... and the next. It turned out he had a natural dysfunction that just occured and because of it he couldn't get to sleep. All those herbal or special made pillows, sleeping pills, nothing worked. After a while he could barely walk, and then, after about a year or two I believe, he finally died of sleep deprivation. So it is possible to die from lack of sleep.

You'll be fine once you get back into a regular sleep pattern.

Try the melatonin --- really -- it'll be in most drug stores and even cheaper online.

No.

I remember seeing a documentary on discovery a couple months ago on insomnia.  A few years back some institute did a study on sleep deprivation.  One of the subjects stayed awake for 15 days strait.  He exibited all of the symptoms you would expect of sleep deprivation.  However, after the study concluded, he slept for 17 hours strait, and after that was perfectly fine.  He was 20-something at the time, and in the documentary he was in his 60's.  They have kept up with him over the years, and there have been no long term effects either.

Oh, definitely.  I can confirm that.  I have chronic insomnia also, and busting a cap or two will definitely help you get to sleep. No joke.

Yea, I'm sure that it was all because of lack of sleep. The whole part of him being tortured an imprisoned in a POW camp, I'm sure, had absolutely nothing to do with his condition.

Is this documented? It sounds like bullshit.
