Girlfriend holds ignition over a good 10 seconds before it turns on

What sort of damage can this cause a car?

You said before it turns on? Like it takes 10 seconds to start? It could be the starter. How does it drive/sound? It could be a fairly simple fix, or not.

Yeah, most likely a starter. Maybe a tune-up if its an old car with a carb. It's not diesel is it?

yeah if this is one of the cars problems she isnt really damaging anything. just keep doing what youre doing until the car dies then go get a different one
