Police say the Canton man was growing pot and selling it with psilocybin mushrooms

CANTON City detectives armed with a search warrant seized marijuana from a northwest Canton man’s house, arrested him and called Child Protective Services to take a child Wednesday morning.

Police say Ian A. Destephen, 30, of the 800 block of 30th Street NW, was growing marijuana and selling it and psilocybin mushrooms from the home.

Detectives with the police department’s Special Investigative Unit seized 38 marijuana plants, butane honey oil, undisclosed amounts of prescription drugs and mushrooms, drug paraphernalia, scales, packaging material, marijuana growing equipment and an undisclosed amount of cash, according to a news release from Lt. John Gabbard of the Canton Police Department.

″(Destephen) did violate his duty to care for his infant ... who was present inside the home and who has access to dangerous drugs and/or drug materials,” the jail records show.

CPS officers took custody of the child as Destephen was arrested at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday and booked into the jail on charges of endangering children and marijuana trafficking and possession.

More charges were pending on Thursday.

“Additional charges ... are pending lab results for weight and analysis,” Gabbard said in the news release.

Stark County court records show Destephen was convicted in 2009 of aggravated drug possession and operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He was sentenced to intensive supervisory probation and three years of community control.

Destephen remained in the jail early Thursday, held in lieu of $26,000 bond pending a Canton Municipal Court hearing.
