KEFIR the Miracle Probiotic (gut flora, eczema, athlete's foot etc)

Kefir is an ancient dairy preparation from the Caucasus that you might be able to get from your well stocked supermarket, health food store, or make your own.

Its kind of like Kombucha, in that its a lumps forming colony of over 20 bacteria and yeasts, this one grows in milk. You basically take milk, add Kefir Grains (the colony) to it, let sit 24-48 hours at room temperature, in which case your milk has become Kefir Milk and your Kefir grains have multiplied.

Kefir Milk contains between a million and a billion beneficial microorganisms per ml, is akin to thin yoghurt in flavor and consistency.

The usual course of action is to drink 1-2 small glasses a day to repopulate your bowel flora woith beneficial bacteria (good vs constipation and lots of other bowel problems) but me being me, I didn't stop there.

Kefir is known to take hold in your bowels, unlike things like yakult, thus favorably altering gut flora and fauna, so in other words cause lasting change.

I read of kefir being used as an alternative to the infamous "poop transplant" thats all the rage in the medical world now, so I decided it was worth the shot, and so I, having considerable constipation, took to taking daily Kefir Milk enemas as well as drinking it, which involves emptying out a full 10ml syringe of kefir milk in the rectum daily, to purposefully infect my bowels with benign microorganisms from both ends.

As could be expected, by bypassing the stomach's desinfection protocol, this worked r4eally well and from the day I started it I started having significantly looser stools.

Since I had a working broad spectrum probiotic on my hands, I decided to also try it by applying oit on the eczema on my arm, and my tenacious case of athletes foot, both cases of microbial imbalance caused by the chlorine of the swimming pool, I figured.

I figured correctly.

In days my eczema and my foot fungus, all related to my microbial imbalance due to swimming in a chlorinated pool, cleared up.

Yay for Kefir as an external and internal broad spectrum probiotic!

Constipation, eczema & athlete's foot cured at once the natural way!

That's interesting kefir is a combo of 20 yeasts and bacteria, kombucha is at least 4 if I'm not mistaken.  I try to minimize dairy consumption so kombucha seemed more appropriate. I bought a bottle of kombucha and started brewing recently

Do you think kombucha would be effective against eczema etc. also? Kombucha. What a fun word.

I read Kefir can also be made as a nondairy product, in which case the relative proportions of the organisms change. Kefir turns most of the lactose into another type of sugar which does not give lactose intolerance but instead is digested by the gut flora, and gives a creamy taste to it.

Kombucha is a balance of microbes too, so it could potentially ease an eczema caused by skin flora being out of balance. If Eczema worsens from kombucha, you likely shouldnt drink it either (allergic reaction)

Is it possible to make kefir like kombucha, where you use a little bit of the old brew to inoculate the new one?
I've got plenty experience kombucha but would not like to buy new inoculant every time.

It's wild that this thread was resurrected, great timing... I've recently been reading up on kefir. I've been taking what I was told was one of the best probiotics but I haven't seen the results I had hoped for(so far). From all I've read, kefir may be my answer...

Ypou take out the Kefir Grains and use those in fresh milk.

Check out some youtube tek's its easy.

I drink Kefir profusely now.

Are you going to use cows milk or goat milk? I'm going to order some grains too but I want to use goats milk... I located a number of local farms through This Website

I'm in europe, so I bought locally. the website I got my stuff off, mentioned that you can use the  kefirgrains with goat, sheep and cow milk. so you should be fine.
I got water kefir grains in the end though.

I find well made milk Kefir to actually be tasty, it has a creamy quality to it because of the poly-sugar made from the lactose.

Were your feet weeping and cracking due to athletes foot? Were you in pain? Were you thinking it could possible be gangrene?

If not, and you want to experience the most extreme pleasure of your life, let your athletes foot get this bad and than turn your shower on basically as hot as it can go and just point it at your feet. The relief is to die for.

Wow... stumbled upon this at the perfect time.

I've been making homemade Kimchi for a little while... love it so much and the probiotic aspect.

I have zero free time at the moment and the process is just on the edge of too time consuming for me. Looks like I'll give kefir a go, I've known about it for awhile but never looked into making it at home.

I got some kefir beans and made kefir. Keeping the beans fed is king of a pain. I have gotten new beans three times.

I've been experimenting with making my own kefir since I want a lower sugar one than I can buy, due to my current attempt at being on a keto diet. You don't even need to buy the fancy grains to make kefir. You can just buy a bottle of kefir at the store and dump some of it into milk or cream or whatever, and that works fine to start the culture. I tried making some kefir Icecream by blending kefir made from heavy whipping cream with some berries, nuts, a dab of honey, and a bit of coconut oil and then freezing it. It's not bad, and also low in sugar and presumably very low in lactose if you're intolerant of that lovely sugar.

Ah. I don't have a good enough sense of how the different probiotics effect the gut. I know that's a pretty active area of research at the moment but I'm not caught up on it. I'm mostly making it to enjoy the nice texture and tangy flavor with the low sugar content. Do you notice any differences in the curds that have more strains?
