chronic pain issues.. solution based?
    #24980515 -

Good morning, everyone.

So, I've been diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis for a long time now and it causes me a great deal of pain especially in the morning. I've been completely opiate free for awhile now and have absolutely no interest in going back on any kind of opiate to handle the pain. Currently I'm being prescribed meloxicam and baclofen to try to manage the pain. It helps but certainly doesn't get rid of the pain/stiffness that comes along with it. I do the stretches my rhuematologist has suggested and I also take long walks as well, as it seems to help.

I have a concern about being on meloxicam, at the doses I'm on, long term as well. I just don't know of what other options I have and I've been avoiding seeing my rhuematologist. He's a good doctor, he knows my history of opiate abuse but still always goes back to wanting to prescribe opiates which is something I'm just not willing to consider.

Are there any other people here who deal with chronic pain? Have you found any non-opiate solutions that seem to help? I know that I should stay better hydrated and a diet change may help. I definitely wouldn't describe the way I eat as "healthy" at all. It's amazing that I'm not overweight, haha. Any suggestions?

I too have been prescribed meloxicam and baclofen for my current injuries. Baclofen seems to dull the pain a little and the meloxicam does nothing aside from making me worry about my internal organs. I use tiger balm or any ointment/ cream that has menthol, camphor, or eucalyptus in it- these balms in conjunction with lidocaine patches seem to help a lot. If the pain gets really severe I’ll pick up some kratom, but this is kind of my last line of defense, especially since it gets expensive and carries some risk of dependency.

So for the most part I do my best to tolerate it. Every morning I use a foam roller and try stretching/ rolling out my back. I also practice sitting up straight and correcting my posture. I eat a lot of avacado and supplement with omega 3 fatty acids. This is supposed to be good for inflammation.

I also use a Reishi mushroom tincture which has anti inflammatory properties as well. Another good one is turmeric. I’m not sure, but fermented foods such as sauerkraut may be beneficial too. Of course, our ailments are not the same, but both include inflammation and back pain. Not sure if this helps or not, but hopefully I mentioned something that you have yet to try or consider.

I suspect having a poor diet is probably amplifying your pain, but that’s just me speculating. Have you tried an inversion table before? Do you apply ice and heat? All things to consider. Best of luck.

I do 1 to 2 hours of physical therapy every night to manage my pain. It hurts like hell but I feel better the next day and fuck opiates. Hope you find some relief man.
