It's a bit of a contradiction, presumably she considers this creature close enough to sentience or whatever that it can offer meaningful "emotional support", yet when push comes to shove, ultimately its life is disposable to her. Maybe she'd receive better emotional support (from humans even!) if she treated this emotional support thing as more of a two-way street.
