Aids for Heterosexuals *updated*
    #24694800 -

If I am correct and the number is .003% risk, then it seems like its a pretty low number. Strange, as a teenager, I always imagined it would be around 13% chance. The hype was big.

Am I correct or incorrect in identifying the heterosexual risk for HIV as (9,339/309,120,000)*100 = .003% chance?

If not, how do you calculate the true percentage risk?

You need to divide by the number of heterosxuals not the total popluation.

So is that per year?

Percentage of risk in what sense? I think calling that number you've come up with the "percentage of risk in contracting HIV in a heterosexual relationship" would be misleading, in that it only takes account of one factor - sexual encounters with the opposite sex.

It assumes that you have every member of the opposite sex lined up, and that you have the ability to have sex with all of them.

Well, the way I see it, if I am heterosexual and 9,339 people/year contract HIV, then I have a risk to be one of those people -- even if the risk is very small.

Something like that.

Did you have another idea in mind?

You can break it down into risk from blood transfusions, needle sharing or sex. It could be even more complex by adding more groups like prostitutes, johns, addicts, etc.

By the same logic, if you are a heterosexual and 1 person/year contracts HIV in your country, then you have a risk to be one of those people -- even if the risk is very small. If all you're trying to convey with the statistic is that people contract HIV from time to time, then you've succeeded. But you aren't saying much.

I am simply shocked at how low the percentage heterosexual risk.

When I was young I thought it was much more common. I just wanted to share.

That's not the risk though, that's what I'm saying is misleading. It's the infection rate.

I found this:

Incidence:

Quote:
Number of new cases of disease or injury during specified period / by Size of population at start of period

Synonyms for incidence proportion"

Attack rate
Risk
Probability of developing disease
Cumulative incidence

That's way more complex, and I wouldn't know. I don't think you could determine it with just the raw numbers of people infected though, and no matter what you did you wouldn't get a perfect number of an individual's risk to contract HIV.

It's like predicting the weather, it's all based on statistical probability of past occurrences based on a set of variables. You get a percentage based on what has happened according to those variables, it isn't a solid 80% indicator that rain will happen today - it's that with the same variables in play rain has happened 80% of the time. With predicting your risk of infection from HIV, you have even less information at your disposal than the meteorologist does with weather, so it would become harder to quantify.

But I am only curious as to what the incidence/probability of heterosexual encounters.

Certainly protected sex would make a difference, but the CDC source I found did not list this factor.

Yes, I feel you. Regression analysis is to predict what the future incidence may be, yet looking at current incidences is also defined as a probability for contracting the disease, as per the CDC.

If you are having sex with prostitutes or junkies the risk probably goes up.

Which country/countries, are you looking at the risk factors for?

It's going to be different in different countries, or even different states/regions in those countries, and then you have to factor in IV drug use, unprotected anal/vaginal sex, and people who get infected via blood transfusions-it's rare in the Western world but not in various African countries.

Also, people are going to say 'Das racist' but apparently in the United States and Canada people of certain races/ethnicities are more at risk for being infected/transmitting HIV.

I am not any sort of expert on statistics though.
