Manditory polygraphs for politicians!
    #2469041 - 03/24/04 10:27 PM (14 years, 2 months ago)

I say we make it manditory for all politicians to wear elaborate biosensors and that the results be available to the public in real time anytime they are addressing the public. This includes the time they are in office, and while they are campaigning for an office.

Isn't it fairly easy to trick those machines, especially if the person is a rather good liar?

The polygraph is not accurate, and relies on human judgement to interpret the results.
See the polygraph and lie detection:
http://www4.nationalacademies.org/news.nsf/isbn/0309084369?OpenDocument

Just as many people once believed in witchcraft, many people have a superstisious respect for the polygraph, believing it scientific. In reality, it is nothing more than a trained (not as much as you might think) operator making a sort-of educated guess about whether you're lying or not.
I can see when bad liers are lying myself, without a machine. A good lyer who is familiar with the machine will pass with ease, and operators _frequently_ finger innocent people.

I do have to admit, though, that if the politicians themselves believed their lies could be detected, they might be more careful about telling the truth.

How about if we require that the president do the State of the Union on Sodium Pentathol?

Alcohol seems to work well at getting the truth out. Maybe the president should give the State of the Union address while wasted. At the very least that'd make it more entertaining.

I think you'd be surprised to find that the majority of the public would be just as capable as you at "handling the truth"...its an ego game that puts you into some emotional / intellectual elite that is somehow superior to the rest of the human race...

I don't know about the rest of you, but I can't handle the truth.
That's why I spend so much time here.
