You could find a toyota or chevy that's reliable but older for a reasonable price.

That's seriously what I'm most freaked out about...I have a 90 day freeze on my shit, and there's an option for 7 year monitoring....which means to do anything I'll have to call the credit bureaus and unfreeze my shit in order to rent an apartment(which I'm gonna have to be doing soon, because I'm looking at moving)..but I feel like I might have to almost do that for peace of mind. Even then it's not foolproof.


Maybe I should just spring for something like lifelock? Even though the CEO supposedly had his ID stolen when he openly invited people to do so as a publicity stunt :lol:

Bummer Op. Hope you can get your stuff back. Or at the very least compensated for it.

I had one of my cars get it's window smashed out, stomped all over the front window breaking that, radio stolen and the car battery. They did end up catching who did it though. Took 2 years but one day I finally got my restituition check for like 1800 bucks.

The funny thing is I always keep my car doors for the most part unlocked, as I don't keep anything of value in my cars. Figure if they're going to steal out of it they'll just break the window. :rolleyes:

The only thing of value in most of my cars are the sound systems. That was a pretty sketchy neighborhood though. It made no sense for them to trash my car though if they were just looking to steal. Just dumb ass people doing dumb ass people shit I guess :shrug: . I absolutely did press charges and eventually got relatively what the car was worth.

I think the car tire was stabbed too, now that I think of it. Plus I sold it for about 500 bucks for parts so I actually turned a profit thanks to them. :lol:

On the identity part I lost a wallet when I moved to Montana. It had my SS, Birth certificate, ID. Pretty much anything you needed to steal my identity. It wouldn't be surprising if they did, but they also wracked up like 200 bucks on my debit card pulling from casino atms. So I'm guessing they just took the cash and the debit card and threw it away.

Which was a pain in the ass to get all that information back. Especially as I was in a completely different state. I don't mind if people find my wallet and take the couple bucks as a finders fee. Turn it in. You know how much ID cards cost these days? Sheesh.

I was moving states. That's the only real reason I had it all on me at one time. I wouldn't go so far as to put it in a safe, but I have a drawer or a place where my important documents are.

Yah I only carry my wallet with me with DL and debit/credit cards. SS card, birth certificate, and passport are kept in a safe and I only bring them out if I have to for a job or whatever and right after put em back. Keeping everything in your car is a bad idea.

Ya same. No reason for me to carry it all. I was so hassled with the move I forgot the most important piece. My identity. Took like 3 months to get everything back in a different state. As the state I was in before that Isn't my home state either. It was a huge pain in my ass. For 3 months I had to have my friend buy my damn smokes for me as I was 25 at the time but I still get ID'd constantly for smokes or beer. It's just habit to pull my ID out these days.

Definitely not something I'd keep in my car. You rarely need those sorts of things unless you live on the border of Mexico or some shit and you have to keep your papers on you because your'e brown. :shrug:

From now on I'm keeping it all in a lockbox - I don't normally have that shit just sitting there in my car and normally I wouldn't just leave it out there, I was just carrying tons of stuff in that day and forgot it. Even when I lived in high rent neighborhoods I'd get notices posted at the front door of my building that another building around the block got burgled - it's super unlikely, but so was having my car stolen from out front of my house in a really safe neighborhood.

I think this was just an opportunist, but I'm gonna be a bit more proactive about protecting my identity after this - in 5 years this will be nothing but a distant memory, but if someone takes out a huge loan or tons of credit in my name it can really fuck my shit up and will continue to for years, so i'm concerned about that.

Nah, I remember locking the car and trying to attach them back to my keyset but I think they fell off my keyset while I was carrying a bunch of stuff in. My house borders the lot my car was parked in so someone could've picked it up and it would've been in range even it if got dropped right in front of the house - I've got my house keys and everything, thankgod because if the whole keyset got lost then we probably would've had to change the locks and everything.



My car was an '09..I think it's harder to hotwire and while it was a zippy little little coupe that I certainly loved(it was purple!).. but it wasn't nice enough for someone to go to the trouble to hotwire in a lot full of equally nice or nicer cars. Whoever it was definitely found my keys.

Sounds like you got a good plan. It happens man I've lost my identity documents before as well. I'm sure it happens to most people. Why they allow you to get 10 SS cards in a life time.  Luckily I have terrible credit from getting a lot of it at 18 and not understanding how it worked. So stealing my identity won't give you shit :lol:

Learn from it. Report it to your social security office. I think that's a thing you can do. Or are supposed to. I just never bothered. If you want to take on my debt than by all means please do. :lol:

Hot wiring is a really hard thing to do. Especially with newer model cars. It's so much easier to just punch the locks with a flathead and a hammer and the ignition. Especially if this was some sort of master thief that has a chop shop in mind as mentioned in op. Those parts are dime a dozen to replace on older cars.

Most 1999+ cars have some alarm system that freaks out if your sitting in a car that was locked and open it from the inside. A lot of people don't know that. Trying to start there car. Put the key in the driver side door and unlock it. Shuts it all down. I don't think stealing cars is really profitable anymore as cars are smart as fuck these days. Not going to steal a geo metro which isn't worth it's weight in scrap metal haha.

So you may have dropped your key on the ground. I've found random keys on the ground but I never just tried the next thing it was next too. All though i'm not a thief but still. A key has no value to me. They're like 2 bucks a copy at Walmart. :lol:

I am horrible about locking my keys in my car. Once a week I'd have to pay a cabbie to break into my car. I've definitely broken into them quite a bit as well. Usually i'm not at my house though. Theoretically you could on an older model car use 2 screw drivers and a wire coat hanger to pop the locks to hot wire it. But when was the last time you've seen a wire coat hanger? :lol:

Edit: Ah I see you already said it's an 09. No way they broke into that without you knowing. The car won't even start with the alarm system going off. Must have dropped your key. Sure it had a lock on and off beep thing that told them exactly which one it was too. Bummer man if you had an 09 i'm guessing you had insurance. They should buy you a new car. Might even get something you like a bit more.

Thanks for the kind words - and yah, I got lucky with my credit - even so I have some minor medical debt I'm still disputing with my old insurance company, but overall it's pretty decent - I really would rather not have someone fuck it all up...because I'll probably need it if I ever want to finance a car and get a reasonable deal doing so in the near future anyways :lol:


It was a 2009 scion tc - I have located my keyset but the car keys are missing from it..but they weren't fully and securely fastened(the night before I had my pup in the car and was loading stuff into it, so I detached it from the main set so that I could keep the air conditioning running in the car while I got the rest of my stuff in...I just think I fucked up and didn't reattach them super securely). Doubt someone hotwired it and since the keys are missing and my house is in range of where it was parked, they literally just found the keys, pressed the unlock button and drove off into the sunset....fucking assholes.

That's how I lost my wallet the most important thing about my move to a new place. So much going on the most basic responses of putting your wallet or keys becomes a 2nd thought. As your dealing with a lot at the time. It's always an automatic. Phone, keys, wallet. Ok I'm good. Dealing with all that extra stuff things that are automatic become not. As you just expect yourself to auto do it.

I always keep my keys on a lanyard. I have a specific way I swing them and pull them into my hand. Than put into my pocket. I mostly lock my keys in my car when I have time to spare and i'm smoking a cig. Listening to music. Chilling. It totally takes out of my repetoire. Asking for a jump as well as I left my lights on :lol:

Lights, car off. Step out. Cool lanyard swing. Pocket. :lol:

nah, house is fine... I found my keyset with my house keys and everything, but they were missing my car keys - so that makes me think the keys were dropped between the house and the car, which wasn't far(it wasn't parked in a driveway, it was parked in a lot right by my house) - at any point they would've been able to find the keys, and they would've been in range.


My dog would've gotten all bent out of shape if someone had broken in and my roommates probably would've noticed.

I'm glad if I had to drop my keys it wasn't also the house keys...it probably would've been a little more difficult to find than the car, but if my house keys were also missing we'd have to change all the locks.


@enjoywho, scions are ugly but the tc is a really cute little coupe if you don't douche it out and add the wing on the back - it was pretty zippy and fast and it was reliable, so I liked it - having two doors kind of sucks though and I was gonna trade it in in like another year or so. And while it had collision and liability, my insurance is not covering it, so I've got to pay out  of pocket for it. I think I'm gonna get another subaru, I loved my old legacy.

I've dealt with a couple coupes. Not cool as i'm usually always down to drive. But having to step in and out. I moved on to the sedans. Your testimony of it reminds me of my ex buying a prius. But it wasn't like the other first priuses at all. It was a really cool sedan. I took every opportunity to drive that thing. The first time I was just pushing the button is it on or what? Yes stop pushing it it's on just put it into drive. Nice. It had some zip to it as well.

I haven't seen one like it since or haven't noticed as they are way nicer than the clunky first priuses.

I loved driving that car. At one point she even said. I want to drive my car. Ah well shit I want to drive though. :lol:

Driving is just something i'm good at and love doing. I've been driving since I was 10. It's something that gives me incredible joy.

I think I know the car you're talking about. I thought you were talking about one of those box fuckers they used to make. When you get your insurance check to get a new car definitely look into the nissan altimas. I love those fucking cars. My last car was a 1999 nissan altima and it broke my heart when I sold it 2 years later for a 300 dollar profit. Nissan makes good cars.

Ugh no stolen car insurance. What's the point of insurance in the first place. Why I don't pay for insurance and drive without getting pulled over or anything. What a joke. Totally screwed you over.

It's a waste of money if you can operate a moving vehicle. I grew up in Alaska. That's where I learned to drive. Skating on ice. Been in close calls. If I did bump someone or they'd bump me we'd just shrug. No worries man. It's just a bump we're cool. As we all are. Some people are just so god damn stupid that they will hit your car.

That same car I related earlier this lady backed into it and left a minor indent. Left her insurance data on my window. Got paid 1200 bucks for minor damage which I would have just shrugged off. Whatever. So for that 3 grand car I actually made about 4500 off it. People can't drive worth dick. See it all the time. Especially here in Washington. Wow people are surprised it rains here and forget how to drive? :rolleyes:

I have a ton of stories white knuckle driving along America's most dangerous road. The old seward highway out to Girdwood. Being snowblind and not being able to see shit. Ramping my car into a snowberm with my littlest of sisters and her friend driving them home. As the roads were so icy and this lady slid out into the middle of the road as i'm doing 5 under and just cranked right. Tapping my breaks. The time I almost hit a drunk native lady that fell in the middle of the street and we were yelling at her get up as I'm cranking the wheel sliding down a hill.

I have stories for days about actual driving. Scared the shit out of me. I find anyone that doesn't live in a place that just has rain getting into wrecks laughable at best. Well that's what happens when anyone over the age of 16 can operate a motor vehicle that is basically a speeding death trap.
