polygraph lie detectors
    #24475592 -

ever done one of these tests?

i might be hooked up to one pretty soon for my old roommate who i lived with for a long time and I agreed to be interviewed by government officials about him. He's doing some top secret scientific work for them or something and they have to do a security clearance. So they will basically interrogate me about him. Wondering how sensitive the machines are, i can get pretty edgy when under interrogation. i might set off the lie meter by just being in the room. They are going to ask me about his life and shit. He said he already disclosed his drug use to them. worried i might mess it up and ruin his life

Polygraphs have been debunked, they dont work.

You can easily cause a false positive and people have been known to lie through them, its pseudo science.

Yes I've been polygraphed by the police. I can honestly say that shit don't work. I told the truth for hours they weren't buying it so I agreed to a poly and told the truth yet again and it said I was lying. I eventually had to just make up some bullshit that they wanted to hear so they'd let me go. If I had ever been called to the stand to testify about it, I would've told the entire court what I endured, which I'm pretty sure is why that "case" never went anywhere.

I don’t want to get back up but I have to so it might as well be today.
Nothing appeals to me no one feels like me, I’m too busy being calm to disappear.
I’m in no shape to be alone contrary to the shit that you might hear.

The point of a polygraph isn't to detect a lie.  It's to trick someone into making admissions they wouldn't otherwise make.

Indeed, polygraphs do not prove anything. Although, they may suggest. They also make you nervous. My last supervisor taught me a little interrogation technique he knew of. It was combined with putting pressure on the subject and using a basic trick that is hard to pick up on -- Especially, he said, for those from the middle east.

Entil is it legal for jobs to give you a polygraph before they employ you?

Nope.  They can polygraph you all they want.  You can refuse, of course, but they can not hire/fire you because of it.

I have a handful of friends with secret clearances and they get polygraphed yearly.

Never heard of a reference being polygraphed, thats pretty odd. When I was interested in doing "secret" research, I was told that the really good stuff is reserved for those actually enlisted in the military. Civilians get less interesting work. I was interested in human performance type stuff though.

Its basically a trick, they use the scientific looking apparatus and tell you they know if you are lying and hope you are tricked into telling them what they want to know. The only valid thing about it is it does reveal stress and the theory is that you will be stressed when you lie. But some people feel no stress when lying and some feel stress when telling the truth.

If you tense up certain muscles each time they ask you a question, it creates a pattern. They know the answers to certain questions so they think this is the pattern when he tells the truth. When you lie, you tense the same muscles and they think its true.

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” (attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville political philosopher Circa 1835)
