Would a metal detector pick up on iron powder from say, a hand warmer? Quick response appreciated.

depends on the concentration, mine picks up the iron in the soil but they're little nuggets

Ive done a lot of Civil War detecting. Sometimes i can go into a area and my detector will make a lot of tiny beeps, i figured out its very very small concentrations of lead and iron from various shrapnel.

yea most of that was near kennesaw. I pretty much go where they are sticking housing developments. They push the topsoil with bulldozers. Ive also done a lot up in Acworth,Dalton, and around the Cassville area.

Rome was a huge ordinance town for the South. Their was lots of ironworks, gun factories, foodstuffs, and lots of valuable mineral deposits.
Plus it had a railroad that ran to Kingston. Rome was burnt to the ground and their were several skirmishes around there.

yeah, I'm just south of there now, you also find all sorts of older artifacts out this way, lots of chirt and flint, I've even found what has many of the characteristics of obsidian but I'm not sure that it's native, just one small deposit

More like it will "interfere" with a metal detector. I have to set my "Ground Balance" in order to block out stuff like iron and minerals in soil. So, if you set your ground balance on a soil like quartz sand, then move to an area with minerals like iron, you will be able to tell the difference with a good detector.
