Anyone ever grown hypholoma capnoides ?
    #2248175 - 01/17/04 11:22 AM (20 years, 3 months ago)

Hi,

has anyone ever grown the brown gilled woodlover (hypholoma capnoides)?
I have some going on PDYA and it looks healthy but it grows very slow. I think it might be due to the PH because they usually grow on rotting softwood and I think that might be rather acidic like peat. Actually I have read at mycokey.com that the whole gender prefers substrates that are somehow related to peat. Any experiences to share ?

Rotting softwood eh? I have tons of pine logs waiting for an innoculant. Is there any edible first round decomposer that likes pine?

hey, I just transferred the culture of H capnoides you sent me to malt agar and rye and pine sawdust, bran mixed with a little spruce. It will probably be a couple of days before I see any thing on the malt agar. It will probably be 10 days before I see anything on the sawdust.

I have seen Brick caps H. subateritium growing on the ground in landscaping in wood chips.

besides H. capnoides theres Hericium abietis, Sparassis crispa I don't know if anyones growing this though, and there's a couple of oyster species that will grow on pine, I think. There are probably more than this too.

Anno said that he has grown SRA on spruce. Maybe the are growing on pine too. See this thread.
I have also grown some P.pulmonarius on spruce - they should do on pine, too.

Great !
Why do you use hardwoods ? I thought they only like softwoods.
At least I have found them only on spruce/firs till now.

By the way, I have still two plates of H. capnoides mycelium left. If someone wants to experiment with these: Fell free to PM me.

There is a page on these is Stamet's book - as they dont grow naturally in australia i dont know much abouit them - ill try some soft woods as well - and some stumps around the place too.

I have found them exclusively on stumps of rotting firs, till now.
But you are right - in Stamets book it says that they are growing on alder and oak too.
( But it also says there that they grow on normal PDYA  )
Btw, what kind of agar do you use ?

And how they are growing on MEA ? Have you get the same problems as me that the mycelium stops growing after some time ?

no, but its very wispy - ive tried again and again to get small rhizomorphic bits to take to new dishes, but they always throw back to the wispy mycelia. We'll get there though im sure.,

I have the same issue with H. capnoides, too. The agar I use is a little bit of everything (wholemeal, starch, honey etc.).
The mycelium shows nice structured growth but it colonizes the plate slowly. Does rye or wbs work for you?

I have only tried wood pellets/sawdust and it grows very slowly on that substrate and forms kind of clumps. I think that this might be due to the fact that H. capnoides does not like PC'ing very much. Zeronio tried to use agar with activated caracole and they seem to do better there ( see this thread ). The activated caracole seems to filter out harmful residues that build up when PC'ing. Since I always PC the wood pellets for quite some time it might be the case on this substrate, too.

I just used some rye on the 14th and it has pretty much colonized it. I used a very little peice (smaller than an erasor) of agar in a pint jar. Unless its a contaminate its pretty fast. I'm thinking maybe I'll do so more rye. When it is colonized add it to some sterilized wood shavings and shake. Maybe do it in a bag press it into decent shape after shaking.

Ragadinks, that culture you sent me was put in the door of the refrigerator till I used it (about 41degrees F). It seems to me it continued to grow at the temp. It may be that it likes a cooler tempature. I've put another jar of agar in the fridge to see how it does at cooler tempatures.

Keep growing.

I going to put a piece of agar onto some WBS. Maybe it likes it better then the pellets substrate. How long did you PC the rye ?

The lower temperature seems to be a good point. I also have experienced that some of the cultures - especially the ones that usually are grown in outdoor beds - are growing faster at room temperature than in the incubator. This strain was collected on the rotting stump of a fir in autumn when the temperatures were between 8-15 degrees Celsius during the day. Keep us updated about the results with your "frigde experiment".

The rye was PC'd for 70 minutes.

What tempature do you run your incubator?

The temperature fluctuates between 23 and 29 degrees Celsius. Normally around 24-26 degrees Celsius.
