Soundgarden is the greatest band EVER!

Listen to their debut album louder than love. "Hands all over" "Get on the snake" "I Awake" AND "Loud Love".

Fucking bullshit man. Very sad today...

Kurt, Layne, Scott, and now Chris. All of my teenaged idols are leaving us too soon.

FWIW Dark Star, I saw Alice In Chains live, touring for their 'The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here' album, and they were AMAZING. No, William is no Layne, but he is a great musician. It was worth it just to see Jerry as well. Such an amazing guitarist. I agree though, there is no replacing Chris in Soundgarden. Very sad day. RIP.

Accidental strangulation does happen. Though if they're calling it a "device" then it probably was intentional.

guess not fent.  maybe he was finally fully clean.  regardless, this is sad and many people will be aching from this

Self-strangulation?

PRETTY NOOSE!

Soundgarden - Pretty Noose

Soundgarden was my first real concert in 1994 at the Salem Armory.  I was pissed off that Chris played 'Black Hole Sun" completely solo, but now I consider it cool.
RIP Chris.

Just another example of fame fortune and talent not guaranteeing happiness. This saddens me, I grew up with his voice more so than many other bands, I will always enjoy his music.

Superunknown was the first CD I ever bought when I was a kid.  I listened to Black Hole Sun a million times on repeat.  Years and years later, that album was a cathartic release from some of the worst depression I've ever experienced.  It got me through where I may not have otherwise.
It's one of the finest ever made, Soundgarden at their peak.
This news is heartbreaking for me.

It's the end as far as I'm concerned. I won't listen to any new Alice In Chains or Stone Temple Pilots. Not the same. Layne, Scott, and Chris were the best singers in rock in years. And now they're all gone. This hits home.

Seriously, man. Legendary singers are dropping like flies. Especially lately. Wasn't Weiland not long before the beginning of last year? Then Lemmy, then Bowie, then Prince...

Sucks though, that some of the best music of the 90s (my coming-of-age) is effectively dead. How many 90s trailblazers are left? The biggest grunge singers are gone. Never been a big fan of Vedder, but he's one of the few...

On the up-side, Trent Reznor and Maynard James Keenan are still alive and well. Now only if Trent can start writing good music again, and Maynard can write... well, anything at all... I'll be all set.

But yeah, this was unexpected and shitty. Definitely didn't see this one coming.

Wonder if it was intentional, or when / if we'll get more details...

Trent Reznor has some of the best all-time staying power as a musician.  The only release he's put out that I didn't dig at all was With Teeth.

Playing that song over and over probably took it's toll on him throughout the years. Just non-stop everyday going through life thinking about putting a gun inside your mouth and pulling the trigger. Glad he kept the autoerotic asphyxiation part in though I'd hate to go out on a soft note.

Yo, I just wanna say I'm wrekt about this whole thing, and even more wrekt that it was suicide by hanging.  That's a deep hole to go down in.  I feel bad that his heart hurt enough that he just wanted it to stop.  It doesn't matter that he's Chris Cornell, Rock God.  He's a human being.  It sucks when human beings hurt that bad.

The first song I reached for was Black Hole Sun.  Just like most people.  That was a badass song.  So was Rusty Cage.  That was my "thrash around the house and break random shit" song in my younger days.

I am grateful to have experienced Soundgarden in the 90s and fully appreciate what they brought to the grunge scene/genre/thing/movement/whatever.  The 90s was a great time to be alive, music-wise.

I just hope he has whatever peace now that so eluded him in life.

To be honest I have very mixed feelings about his output post-fragile. I think Pretty Hate Machine was great, and a bit ahead of its time. Broken was a brilliant record, and a harbinger of what was to come. The Downward Spiral is one of the greatest industrial rock albums ever, probably one of the better "concept albums," and IMHO in certain regards it was the peak of Reznor's career. (Especially with regard to production and super creative use of sampling.) The Fragile, which is a favorite of many NIN fans, contains some of his best and worst writing, IMO. The production is still layered, but comes across as much cleaner and more polished IMO.

Then a bit of a hiatus, while he cleaned up his act, got off drugs, etc.

Then we get "With Teeth."  Much more electronic, which was an interesting direction... but also struck me as somewhat less inspired. A few really good songs on that album, though. Like "Right Where it Belongs" which is one of Trent's best ballads, IMO.

Then Year Zero. Similar to the last one, stylistically. Maybe even a bit more electro. This one took me almost longer to get into than WT, and I honestly prefer some of the remix versions better than the originals. On that note, the remix album was pretty great, and the concept of including the multitracks was absolutely inspired marketing. Worked too, as that was the first physical NIN album I bought since Fragile. lol

Then we get... what?  Ghosts?  Okay, kinda neat. But not a "real" NIN record.

The Slip?  Thanks for the gift but... damn. Did he throw this together in a weekend? Easily my least favorite NIN album. Barely feels like "NIN," to me.

Hesitation Marks... I'll admit this is the most exciting NIN album in a while. But I almost can't tell if he was trying to return to an older style in some of the tracks (a la TDS) but failing... or if he was trying to blend elements of the older style with the newer. If it was the second, he somewhat succeeded. But stuff that vaguely sounds like Year-Zero-Era NIN trying to write TDS-era NIN songs almost made me hungrier for the raw inspired chaos of TDS. It was a happy man trying to make an angry-ish record, and that made it seem kinda odd too. That said, I did like some of the more positive vibes in Hesitation Marks. I'm probably one of the few people who think "Everything" is an excellent song. lol

But while I really liked some of the tracks, and the vibe, I thought some of the electro stuff was a little too heavy, and some parts of the album honestly bore me a little. But it's a weird mix of kinda depressing and kinda upbeat, that I'm rarely in the mood for these days...

Truth be told, I'm not sure I like Trent working with Atticus. But how much is he to blame for the shift in Trent's style? It messes me up, because i really love some of Ross' early work, and stuff with other bands. (Have you heard his project "12 Rounds?" They've got some good stuff:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/12_Rounds

But that being said, Ross is credited as a producer and/or programmer on With Teeth, Year Zero, Ghosts, The Slip, and Hesitation marks. So is that just a (huge) coincidence, or is it the influence of Ross that's bringing Trent in a direction I don't like? Wish i knew. But I'd suck a big bag of dicks to hear a 2017 NIN album produced by Trent Reznor, Danny Lohner, and nobody fucking else. Okay, maybe Flood can get in on that. Just saying.

That said, I've loved everything Maynard's ever put out (the last Puscifer record was mediocre compared to the previous, but still)... so I'm pretty psyched for a new Tool album. If they ever decide to finish it...

/rant

Sorry, I'm kinda into NIN. I just think some of the older stuff was a little more... inspired. And I really don't want to think that was just the drugs. :frown:

Trent's a motherfucking boss, love me some NIN.  His works with Atticus Ross on several films soundtracks are also wonderful.

With Teeth is a wonderful album, Sunspots is an amazing song, so is Right Where It Belongs, the title track With Teeth oozes sexuality.

"Fell on Black Days" hits the nail on the head. Years of cyclical depression & substance abuse, that song rang so true. I got pretty down this winter, listened to that song & of course it still rang true.

I'm just as big a fan of NIN as you are.  I have all the halos, including the multi-part single maxi-pack bullshit like Closer, MotP and WITT.  Also have Closer casette tape single and PHM vinyl.  All in great condition.  Cherished.

I think we have a pretty solid agreement in the way we think of NIN albums except I think YZ is phenomenal.  I was so angry about With Teeth I swore off NIN, strong words from an obsessive fan, but I still hate that album.  But then I heard some of the YZ leaks that Trent left in the bathroom stalls of his shows and I was like HOLY FUCK NIN'S BACK!  I didn't LOVE anything post-YZ but I think they've all been solid releases.
In order:
TDS
YZ
Broken
The Fragile
PHM
...
the rest
