The Chris Stevens Story

Six-fifteen, Chinooks. Rise and Shine. It's a clear forty-eight degrees in Cicely, Alaska, North American continent, planet Earth. This is Chris-in-the-Morning on KBHR. It's crisp, clean, late-autumn mornings such as this that take me back to the Wheeling, West Virginia, of my childhood-mornings when my Dad would turn to my Uncle Roy and say, "Put the boy in the truck, Roy, we're going hunting." I'd lay back there with the sky slipping by overhead, while in the cab Dad and Roy passed the White Lightning between them...

So, people, time for my annual hunt with Holling Vincoeur on these, the last few days of hunting season-Holling with his single-lens Reflex, me with my Winchester. Time to head into the Forest Primeval and shoot us some fair game. Speaking of which, here comes Maggie O' Connell down Main Street with what appears to be a nice-looking ten-point buck across her hood.

It was a long-ago Winter's day when me and my soulful friend Ronnie Barad liberated several albums from Sam Blade Records in downtown Wheeling, West Virginia. Back at Ronnie's safe and dry, we listened all day to our stolen stash, Blues music that gave sound and name to that brooding sense of torment and dispair we felt so strongly at nineteen and still feel sometimes today, especially in deep winter days like this.

We dedicate this music to you, Ronnie. Just starting your latest three-to-five in Lompoc, because the best way out of winter is through it. Like Carl Jung says, embrace your grief, for there your soul will grow.

Netflix has all six seasons; I have a couple books too, this exerpt was from Love, Life, and the Whole Karmic Enchilada.
