Jon Stewart on Chris Wallace (Fox) + misinformation link
    #14641575 - 06/20/11 07:07 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Apologies if this has already gotten a lot of attention here.
Jon Stewart appeared on Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace yesterday, and the resulting interview turned out to be an absolute must-see.

The 24 minute (as opposed to 12) unedited interview can be found at this link:

http://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2011/06/jon-stewart-and-chris-wallace/240675/

The interview speaks for itself.

For those who haven't seen the statistics Stewart mentions about Fox viewers being uninformed, here's a link to a rather comprehensive University of MD study (which is one of many that came to this conclusion).  If that sort of data doesn't give mass-media consumers pause, I don't think anything will.

http://www.worldpublicopinion.org/pipa/pdf/dec10/Misinformation_Dec10_rpt.pdf

Despite sticking to factual statements, I have a feeling some will think this post is an ideological smear - which is all the more reason to watch this interview!

Goddamn Jon Stewart murdered Chris Wallace in that interview. Jon Stewart has definitely transcended comedy and is now a seriously ace interviewer. Good shit...

I watched this last night. I thoroughly enjoyed Jon Stewart's interview.

In fact, the ONLY reason I watched Fox News Sunday was because of the Jon Stewart interview.

On Fox they must have only aired the half-length 12 minute vision? Thats at least what I read-but I can't trust everything  I read... esp on the interwebs

I watched the show on Hulu. I think they did only air the 12 minute version. I'll re-watch it in a bit and see if the length is the full 24 minutes.

EDIT: It seems the Hulu version had a roughly 13-14 minute interview with Jon Stewart.

Thanks for the link to the longer version.

He shouldn't have to make any point other than this one.

Political coverage in mainstream news media has become a joke. Like Stewart said, these pundits focus on sensationalism and instigating conflict to the point where they, themselves, have turned into comedians.

John Stewart isn't a news reporter. He's an actor who plays the part of one on a show that mocks the news presentation format. When I watch The Daily Show I expect over-exaggeration and ridiculous, outlandish personalities that are, ultimately, trying to garner ratings and an audience. When I watch the news, on the other hand, I shouldn't expect these things... and, yet, this is what they dish out.

John Stewart, hereby, is "given credibility" because, IMO, he's the only one that actually admits he's putting on an act for his show. The rest of these guys, however, are trying to maintain the illusion that they are being totally sincere.

Yup, their is a worrying fusion of information and entertainment. The lines have become blurred, commentators state opinion as fact and there is almost  no distiction made.

Recently, fox hasn't been all to bad. When Stewart is on, they generally let him make his points. Even O'reiley, he usually shouts over people he disagrees with but lets Stewart speak and has him on often.

You have to ask them. Personally, I am not a fan of his style or the way he conducts interviews. The one time I saw him on fox he acted like a buffoon(probably intentional). He did a great interview out of character with meet the press. I will try to find it. I like him a hell of alot more out of character than in.

jon stewart is a douchebag or at least his producers are. he has a stage name hiding his jewishness for some reason unbeknown to me and his brother is current COO of the New York Stock Exchange. I don't believe he is where he is because he's talented.

http://redactednews.blogspot.com/2010/10/jon-stewarts-executive-producer.html

he has ridiculed the desire for analysis of an important event in american history.

thats the interesting thing about the scenario, john stewart is not playing a character on his show, john stewart plays himself. in my opinion, both sides are playing the opposing role, it's totally mutual, and niether can reconcile their perceptual and ideological difference. it is extremely interesting that the liberal media manifests in the form of comedy television, and the conservative media manifests in like you say, almost suspense-thriller cinematic style news reporting. take fukushima for example, i myself was glued to the news of this for weeks.

the media is an ideological apparatus of the state. the system  finds a sexual like jouissance (sexual suffering) in creating this irreconcilable and inherently ideological difference. either side argue with so much passion that their imaginary differences actually define their real experience.

the absurd example of this is the fact that john stewart has a narcissistic schizophrenic strategy in dealing with the reality of his imagination. he claims to simply play a character, but everything he says is meant to shape peoples and opinions and consquently does so based upon his "ideaological background" as he even admits in the video

at no point is his comedy seperate from his political ideaology. he is first and foremost a news reporter even if he claims just to be a comedian. he admits playing a fake news reporter, that's what he is first, what is a fake news reporter other than the exact opposite of chris wallace, a real news reporter? he illusions himself to this fact even. thats how the liberal media informs their demographic, thru comedy and overidentification, critical anylsis, rather than indoctrination on the right wing.
