Gourmet/Medicinal Mushroom Trade
    #24149216 -

Hello everyone!
Firstly, if this is in the wrong place, please forgive my stupidity. Im new to using the forums here.
Ive been cultivating different fungi for over 10 years now, but only recently joined the fantastic community here(Lurking). Already, ive met some great people and learned multitudes!
Ive been working in western Canada the last year, in forestry. Unfortunately, most of the cultures(obtained through various vendors and friends) have died or lack vigor, due to senescence :frown: I take wild isolates from wood bearing species all the time, so check in with me if thats your cup of tea. I had a wild isolate of the 3 hericium species, a wild maitake, a wild oyster, COTW, etc

Now what im after: I run a small booth in my local farmers market, where I sell mushrooms and sawdust block kits. Im hoping to replace the cultures listed below, preferably by trade, as I want to start working on my rating and contributing to the community. Im not looking for anything free, I will pay for shipping, and I will even purchase strains from respected members, but ive already invested most of the money I have into my lab, so if anyone wants to trade, that would be ideal :stoned:
://

I have spore prints of pink oyster, brat oyster, reishi, golden oyster, lions mane, maitake, and a couple active species. I also forage mushrooms avidly, so I have plenty of chaga and rare(dried) mycorrhizal mushrooms to offer anyone interested.
If by chance, you have a strain or two listed below and want one of the other species listed, I would be happy to send you a plate as soon as it arrives and I have isolated it(If you dont mind sending me the strains first). I have about a month to prepare for my first market, so im really pressed for time.

Species I would like to replace:
-Shiitake(Lentinula edodes) - Any variations you have
-Hen of the Woods(Grifola frondosa)
-Lions mane(Hericium erinaceus)
      -(Hericium americanum)
            &
      -(Hericium coralloides)
-Pink Oyster(P.djamor or P.salmoneo stramineus)
-Golden Oyster(Pleurotus citrinopileatus)
-Blue Oyster(Pleurotus columbinus)
-Elm oyster(Hypsizygus ulmarius)
-Cordyceps militaris(fruiting variety)
-Cordyceps sinensis
-Blewit(Lepista nuda)
-Any reishi species or unique ganoderma phenotypes
- Wine Stropharia(Stropharia rugosoannulata)
-Nameko(Pholiota microspora)
-Enokitake(Flammulina velutipes)
-King Oyster(Pleurotus eryngii)
-Beech mushroom(Hypsizygus tessellatus)
-Any interesting active prints would be cool too, ive never worked with any truffle strains

Thank you everyone, I hope I havnt angered anyone or wasted the moderators time. Im just a young man, fighting for my spot in the world. PM if interested
:mushroom2:

I forgot to mention the variety of dried gourmet mushrooms I have to offer in a trade:
-Golden Chanterelles
-Pine Mushrooms
-King & Queen Boletus
-Yellow Foot Chanterelle
-Pacific Blue Chanterelle
-Slippery Jack Boletus
-Hedgehog
-Admirable Boletus
-The fabled Blue Knight(Albatrellus flettii), which was said to not be a great edible, but is decent if dried fresh. Smells of fruitloops and is excellent cooked with steak or beef

and of course, plenty of chaga, whole or powdered

Quote:

Unless you have a case of extremely severe bad luck, I highly doubt that "senescence" was the case.  Do you have any reason/evidence as to how you came to this conclusion?

I've obtained cultures from just about every vendor on here, and traded with so many people I can't even remember, and never had a problem with "senescence".  I keep putting it in quotes, because I think it's bullshit, for the most part...

But anyway, here's a few thoughts:

- reputable vendors on here don't sell "senesced" (if that were a word) cultures, or they would have a really bad reputation and no longer be in business.

- maybe your agar recipe needs some work?  John Holliday, who used to run Aloha medicinals, if I remember correctly used to recommend changing up your agar recipe and running the culture across a few different plates with different recipes, giving the culture a wider variety of nutrients.  That's how he kept all his cultures going for so long without ever having problems with "senescence".  Again, why I think it's bullshit.  If you were to eat only potatoes, and nothing else, you would eventually become very weak and probably die.  The same goes for fungi.  They need a variety of nutrients to thrive.  Try running one of your "bad" cultures across a few plates of some different agar recipes with different nutrients, and see if you can bring them back to life.  Unless they're just plain dead from improper storage, age, lack of oxygen, moisture, or some other reason, I bet you could revive them and see them thrive.

Sorry I haven't got anything going and ready to give to you, it would take time I don't have, but I've got a pouch of about 30, 3 year old slants in my fridge, as well as dried up old plates, that I almost guarantee I could revive by giving them proper nutrition and time to grow/heal.

Point is - vendors and shroomerites alike - nobody fruits/clones/fruits/clones/fruits/clones/repeatedly the same culture (this is the ONLY way I believe senescence occurs, but what do I know?).  What would be the point?  Instead, they work from the original slant/plate.  If it gets old, they transfer to a plate of a different agar recipe and re-slant.

How you would be seeing THAT much senescence I just don't understand...

Woah Woah Woah,  let me stop you for a second.
I wasn't saying the cultures I had died because of the vendors. The vendors here are great, I've used many in the past. They were all wonderful isolates that I've been working with for over 6 years! They did however, lose their genetic vigor due to senescence. If you read my post more thoroughly(I know it's long and tedious), you'll see that I was away for a year, working. I didn't make any long term storage preparations because I was only supposed to have a 2 month contract. Upon my return(3 weeks ago), I tried to start growing out plates, but my once healthy master cultures, were weak and overgrown with secondary mycelium. :frown:
I use 3 different agar recipes to do exactly that, but unfortunately they were simply left too long.
You have some excellent points and I really appreciate you taking the time to offer some helpful advice Forrester

Ah, I did miss some info I guess, didn't mean to slam on ya, shoulda read more.

But you did say - overgrown with secondary mycelium?  That to me would indicate that it was contamination, not senescence that was your problem.  Not pointing fingers, I'm fairly sure most of my slants are contaminated at this point (when I made them, I was a noob working in a SAB), reviving them is a task and I often end up with molds myself...

But senescence is supposed to only occur with repeated fruiting and cloning, isn't it?  Not overly long-term storage.  Or am I wrong?

Sorry Forrester, it was my poor choice of wording. I meant the master cultures had grown close to the rims of the dish before I left... Then grew another 13 months on the same agar, my fault  :facepalm3:
Some of the strains managed to fruit off just the agar, but almost all of them consumed at least 50% of the agar and either grew thiiick white mycelium, or secondary mycelium (but did not fruit). I believe they would have been fine, had I used a long term storage method and fridge to slow the growth, but it was an unforeseeable job opportunity that I couldn't pass up 2700km away. I think you're right my friend, I just assumed because it fully colonized the agar 1000x over and wouldnt grow on new plates, that it was because of senescence, but that was a broad assumption.

Hey guys,
I've had a couple people reach me about cultures, thank you so much! However, I've only managed to get pearl oyster, king oyster, and reishi thus far. Time is a large issue for me guys, I need to start working with these cultures ASAP. That's why I've decided to sweeten the pot!

In addition to what I've offered above, for every species I aquire, I will write an informative tutorial thread (although I'm sure there's plenty already), to contribute something back to this wonderful community.

Although i dont have mush $ to spare, I will happily pay experienced members for their time. I really need to enlist everyone's help here, anyone willing to help, that is. I would truly be indebted

Thanks again everyone, the Shroomery gives me hope for humanity

I have not been a member here for a great while, though I am experienced.  Out of curiosity, what particular species of reishi did you obtain/do you have?

cool, a  fellow Ontario-ian  ! lol.  From whereabouts? I'm on the east side of the GTA just outside of Guelph. I've already been out a few times looking for mushrooms when we got some prolonged thaws, but was a bit too late and only found some rotting lions mane and oyster. Also found a cluster of some rotting mushroom that looking like black trumpet but was definitely not. What sort of places did you like to hunt around back here?

Nice to meet you! I've got a lot of foraging spots up here in Ontario(2 hours north of GTA) but im quite secretive and selfish with my locations. I'm hoping to pass them down to my children and future generations
If you ever need strains, I'd be happy to send some your way

Cmon yee Shroomerites!
I've been gone for a couple days, hoping to come home to the little flashy mailbox icon, but no one PM'd me :frown: Do people not cultivate gourmet and medicinal mushrooms anymore? Or is everyone just not willing to share?
I figured there would be people on here willing to help a fellow cultivator get his livelihood back, especially for money and gratitude. When im back at the top of my game, I can assure all of you, that I will have a specimen of something you want.
What's going on guys? Pm and shoot the shit with me
