Yes. But now it is Deconica instead of Psilocybe.

Still a very neat mushroom.

They are indeed that species.

As far as putting them in the genus Deconica, that isn't entirely accepted yet. Index Fungorum, which is maintained by the mycologists at Kew, still lists the species as a Psilocybe. Interestingly, if we accept it as a Deconica, it was Fries himself that placed it there.

Happy mushrooming!

I thought the presence of psilocin is what separated Deconica from Psilocybe

Wouldn't that automatically place them?

Originally species were categorized by characteristics, which can be subjective, because different people could choose different characteristics to choose from.  To make classifications less subjective and more uniform, DNA is used to create classifications based on genetics and shared ancestry. I'm not sure if this is why they do this with particular species, but it is most often the case when classifying species.

FYI...there are mushrooms in the genus psilocybe which are not active, such as Ps. montana - just as there are a handful of species outside the class which are active, such as some panaleous and conocybes. Although there seems to be a lot more movemnt and reclassification of species with mushrooms than for other species, so names are often changing. I'm old, so some of my info may now be obsolete.

I'm sorry, but that is incorrect.  Psilocybe montana was moved to Deconica.  That's what we are talking about, the reclassification of inactive Psilocybes to Deconica

Like I said, I'm old, so so.e of my info is probably outdated. I was remembering from Stamets' guide. So these mushrooms are,the formerly, Ps. Montana?

Yup.  If you're reading information out of a book it is old.  The mycology world seems to be a hot mess of reclassifying right now.  Well, it's a hot mess to my eyes and limited understanding.

Thats why this site is great. When I was learning to hunt mushrooms, the only info was in paper books and journal articles. But now I can count on being connected to a wealth of cyrrent knowledge and experience. Mushroom hunting used to be a more solitary pursuit. I never knew anyone else who was serious about it the way I was. They were out there but we werent connected like this.
