A Helena man may have been in pursuit of a mystical journey when he allegedly inhaled the smoke from a vision-inducing herb Tuesday, but instead, his explorations resulted in a quick trip to jail.

Adam Marshall Saksa, 20, is facing a charge of criminal endangerment after he allegedly led Helena police on a high-speed chase through town ending at the intersection of Fifth and Ewing, near Central School, just as classes were dismissed for the day.

He told officers he was driving under the influence of Salvia Divinorum, a plant that, when smoked, is known to cause hallucinations.

According to police reports, officers received a 911 call just after 2:30 p.m. from someone reporting a reckless driver in the area of Broadway and Rodney.

The caller said the vehicle was traveling between 70 mph and 80 mph, passing other motorists and speeding through stop signs.


For the next 20 minutes, dispatchers continued to receive complaints about the vehicle as Helena police attempted to close in on the car.

At one point, callers said, the driver stopped the car in the middle of the Cruse and Lawrence intersection, climbed on the hood and roof and started yelling.

Finally, Saksa allegedly drove past Central School at about 60 mph, plowing over several orange cones that had been placed out in front of the school, dragging one for several feet.

Then, he parked his car on Warren Street near the school and began to walk away from the running vehicle, police reports indicate.

At that time, officers stopped Saksa to question him about his behavior and noticed that he "could not remain stationary," "babbled incessantly" and "appeared to be in a euphoric state of mind."

He was able to reveal to officers, however, that he inhaled the smoke of a tropical flower called Salvia Divinorum on Feb. 2, the initial effects of which he said made him uncomfortable, but then "it makes you feel like Jell-O."

In addition, Saksa said he had smoked marijuana Tuesday and again Wednesday.

No one was injured in the incident.

Bond was set for Saksa at $50,000.

If convicted of the crime, Saksa faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and/or a $50,000 fine.

I wouldn't go that far... but I think his drug using privs (not that they exist) should be revoked for such an immature stunt.

Hey I got an idea lets a drug where you lose all control and go driving on it so you can bring media attention to it so it'll become illegal. Next time he should just drive blind-folded on elephant tranqualizers.

please show me where the article states the day on which he smoked salvia. i read it over and over and didn't see it. all i see are details about what days he smoked pot. i thought it pretty fucking stupid to even include that information but we all know why it was.

We even sure this actually happened? this is really some stupid propaganda-ish shit.... what kind of person tries to plead "No, I wasnt running from the cops, the drugs did it, I was driving and trying to get high, and then I didnt know where I was!! go easy on me..."

what a horrible thing to do to an orange traffic cone... that man should be sentenced to visit sick and wounded orange traffic cones in the hospital as community service... and he should also have to pay to take care of their conecubines...
