Re: Microsoft using malware tactics to trick people into upgrading to Windows 10 [Re: tdubz]

Malicious hackers do not target GNU/Linux or one of the other free alternatives as much because there are A) far less people using it, B) the attack surface varies far more, C) since the software used is mostly free anytime a vulnerability is discovered an army of coders gets really irate and fixes it.

Windows and osx dumb down their interface greatly to try to meet the needs of the lowest common denominator while doing so quite poorly (Windows is the poster child for this). Neither os offers much control, freedom or understanding and will not prepare anyone for using computers in general. This leads to the fallacy that GNU/Linux is hard, most distros are extremely well documented and easy to use for general computer users, the only real requirement is to be able to read. Only niche and mostly unknown distros like t2 sde or sabotage are actually challenging to use.

The biggest hurdle in making the change is breaking the years of bad habits proprietary software has ingrained into their victims, in the long run it will be much easier than it was learning to use windows for the first time in elementary school.

Windows wasn't even invented when I was in elementary school. We used to have a computer with a orange screen in every class and would have to put our names on a list to get on there and have a go. Obviously there was no real graphics, it was just text based computing. Used to love having a go on that thing.

Only Linux on all of my machines now. My kids bitch and moan that they want Windows. I tell em that's fine, but then they can't connect to my network. Lol. Poor mites, don't realise the favour I'm doing them.

Yea, I never used windows in elementary school either, but I imagine a lot of users here did have that experience or at least something comparable.

You could try installing something like RetroArch and one of the many libretro emulator cores, that might change their tune!

I'm too ingrained with windows to change but maybe I will after some programming classes and Cisco classes.

New Ubuntu based Linux distros like Mint are a natural progression for Win7 & XP users, much easier to use and more well thought out than Win 8 & 10.

I could never get my wife to move to Debian, it was too hard/different for her, but she picked up Mint in a second.

New Linux desktops aren't like the old.

I agree mint is pretty simple just a little difficult understanding how to install packages at first.

Not anymore, they fixed that, the installer on the new releases is just point and shoot.

I've been meaning to try out linux on a spare computer for a while now, really going to have to dig into that.

for now though, I reinstalled win 7 a few months back, knowing the hassle with win 10, I chose to never turn on updates.

Knew someone else that attempted to upgrade to win 10, totally screwed up their drivers.
A number of them could not be "upgraded or re-installed" because the laptop already had them, but windows 10 couldn't use/see them therefore they also couldn't be uninstalled because windows 10 didn't think there was anything to uninstall.

The reverted to windows 8, I think to upgrade they'll have to unistall drivers than upgrade...but understandably they've chosen not to go through with that hassle.

I think it's one of the best windows Microsoft has ever made personally. The spying though as I already mentioned really creeps me out and makes me wonder how many other "back doors" or "0" day vulnerabilities windows has that cannot be detected by the common public. This also reminds me of another thread discussing how windows code is adapted to different country government standards. For instance, if the Chinese find something they don't like in the windows code they won't use it until that part of the code is fixed. (when first released)
