1st time learning how to skate! Need tips for selecting the right board * 1

So I've been wanting to learn how to skate for quite some time, but never got around to it because of school, lack of funds, etc. This summer, I've decided that it's time for me to learn this sport. I would like to know a few things: how do you select the right board for a beginner? What is the price range and what do you get for each price margin? Are cheap boards any good? Are there different boards for different purposes (better boards for different tricks)? What are some good on-line resources for total newbs who haven't done any sports in years (haven't done any sports since middle school since my parents made me focus purely on academics)?
I'm pretty skinny too: last time I checked, I was at 106 LBs for a height of 5'4"1/2. Does this matter when choosing the board?

Primarily your focus points are going to be on board width, trucks, bearings, wheels and board material.

For street skating you want a board that isn't super wide. I like to use a 8in board though but I don't do many flip tricks anymore. They're definitely easier to figure out your balance on and get the hang of just riding around or landing on the board.

Wheels should be determined by the quality of whatever your riding on. Smooth ground I like hard small wheels but on sidewalks or anything outside of a skatepark they're aggravating to ride.

Bearings should be fast enough to not have to push every three seconds but slow enough for you to figure out how to stop and line up your tricks.

You don't want your trucks super loose because the board can be to responsive to land on or be stable. But to tight and turning becomes o problem.

A lot of these are my preference, there's not really a "right" or "wrong" way to set up your board, just whatever you perform best on. It can take a while to figure out your preferences but don't get frustrated!

If you're serious about skateboarding, you don't want to buy a pre-built board. A good deck will probably be about 50. Then goods trucks, wheels, and bearings will be another 50-75.

Build your own board. Don't buy cheap bullshit. You get what you pay for. In the end you'll spend at least 150 bucks.

Yes, that's around what it costs for me every time I build one up too. Once you get on it it totally justifies the cost.

Throw the skateboard in the garbage and buy a motorcycle. If you are 18, you are already too old for that shit.

I suggest buying an alien workshop on destructo trucks with ricta core wheels and bones brigade bearings.

With that exact set up you can pull off a switch laser flip down a 10 stair first attempt

Motorcycle? Nah, can't afford that, and I'd be sure to get killed within a few months of riding such a thing.

My friend told me to get a long board instead, but nah, I wanna learn how to do tricks like this guy:

For a beginner just grab whatever complete board at your local shop is cheapest and appeals to you. Most chain board shops like west 49 will have a complete board for $80. Small shops don't usually have complete boards pre built and ready to go but if you tell the dude in there what your needs are then he'll hook you up with what you need. Just give him a price range.

Cheap boards are fine. For a beginner I would argue that shoes, bushings, and bearings are more important than anything else. Shoes are the most important tool when skateboarding. I spend as much or more on my shoes than I spend on my boards.
I rode with the cheap $40 decks many many times when funds were short and for 90% of my skating they were on par with the $100 boards. They just break a lot quicker if your landing hard. Nobody can recommend a specific mold for you because the minor differences in concave and curves will be preferred differently by every skater. I prefer decks with a deep concave and a sharp pop.

I always go with almost or enjoi when I can afford it. If I can't afford either of those companies I just choose whatever looks the coolest and has some good concave.

You'll need to look at width of the board this is going to affect your skating. I like an 8" deck. I've skated with everything from 7.5" to 8.8" and I've found that 8" is perfect for me. I rode mostly 7.5" or 7.9" when I was a beginner. But it's all up to what you like the feel of under your feet. 

All trucks are more or less the same, it's the bushings that make the trucks. I like soft bushings. You might like medium or stiff better.
Wheels are basically just choose how hard or how soft you want them. I'll skate any hard wheel I won't skate those gel wheels fuck those bad boys. I ride exclusively spitfire wheels, no better wheel on the market. I prefer a small diameter wheel.

Be aware dude this is an expensive as fuck hobby especially when you skate hard. I would go through 5-6 decks, a pair of wheels, and 3-4 sets of bearings every summer. I skate fucking long and fucking hard though. Skating is more than an activity, it's a way of life. Once you get that passion for the sport it's the most fulfilling thing in the world. There's nothing sexier than a perfectly stomped 3-flip first thing in the morning... All of your spare time will be spent on a board. I would live on my board if I could. Skate or die isn't just a phrase, it's truth, once you get some concrete in your blood there's no going back.

Buy a skateboard. It'll be the best decision you've ever made.

do bone swiss still make the best bearings? I remember learning on a piece of shit with terrible bearings. When I custom built a board for the first time with some bone swiss in them, the first time I jumped on the board I fell flat on my ass.
