Microsoft using malware tactics to trick people into upgrading to Windows 10

Microsoft really wants you to upgrade to Windows 10.

The American tech giant has been aggressive pushing updates to its desktop operating system onto its users — and drawn significant criticism for the techniques employed.

The latest: Automatically upgrading users if they click X to close a pop-up about the update.

The new tactic was spotted by Brad Chacos over at PC World. For months, GWX (Get Windows X), the app responsible for all the Windows 10 update prompts, has been pushing updates onto users, to which the only way to opt-out was to press the X in the top-right corner to close the app (just like you do any other app).

But now GWX has changed its behaviour, and will take you pressing the X as a signal that you're happy to carry out the update at a time it provides. Instead, you have to manually change or remove the update time if you want to opt-out.

So if you're used to clicking X to get rid of the pop-up because you really don't want to (or can't, for software compatibility reasons) upgrade, then you might find yourself upgrading all of a sudden anyway.

There are reports on social media that users are being tricked into upgrading this way — much to their annoyance.

The bigger question is why is Microsoft pushing "free" upgrades to Windows 10 with such a vengeance?  I suspect it's because they either know it sucks so bad someone will have to buy Windows 11, or because they are able to extract more information and sell it about the user.

Fuck Microsoft, and in particular their vaccine pushing founder.

They want everyone on the same platform everywhere that's why for what reason well I got a couple conspiracy theories about that. :tinfoil:

gee uh who do you think?  Microsoft has more updates they force down your throat than anyone else combined.  They just do the updates, and if you don't let them, your program stops working. Now the prompts to upgrade to windows 10 are about every third day, for a while it was every day. Then they set up the change and you have to say no to stop it.  Fucking bullshit get lost Microsoft.  The program gets worse over time, I think Windows 7 was the peak and after that it's been downhill.

I think win 10 is great I just hate how it pretty much spy's on everything you do. But so does everything on the net so I dunno what to think really I wish I could go back in time before the surveillance state was at the level it is at now and will be in the future.

Windows X/10 is windows as a service, instead of buying a license for the operating system, you get win 10 "free" and later down the line when everyone's settled into it, they start offering subscription models, penalising those who do not subscribe with adverts and of course, spyware a plenty.

It's cost the company I work for a lot of downtime and nashing of teeth. I told the boss to write a big expensive invoice to Microsoft and encourage his peers to do the same. This is costing people and business money, and in some cases, it could cost people their lives:

Lives could have been put at risk by pushy upgrade

There's a registry hack you can do that stops the windows 10 spyware from installing on your computer. However, this little program I've been using does the same thing:

Just tell your boss to use a operating system that does not require to bend over for their developers and those that pay them.

Eh, it's a 70 year old man, I'm not gonna install linux on his system. That said it'd do all he needs but, nah. Half of my job is being his secretary which means showing him where he saved his files so he can attach photos to customers.

If you aren't willing to present the solutions then why are you complaining? There are other choices besides linux anyways, haiku would probably be a step up even....

I'll put it on my wee pc (I'm gonna do a writeup on it soon) and I can bring that over to show him how it works. He uses thunderbird, picasa and libre office so there's nothing windows exclusive really.

It's not a big priority at the moment, cleaning up the workshop and serving the 110v/60hz turntables and record cleaner machines is what the customer wants.

Then redesigning the website
And fixing the light fixtures (LED lamps are getting cheap these days)
Cleaning the demo area so customers can sit down and listen to music. Finding a place to rest all the fucking bare platters as well as completed turntables.
And feeding the cat that comes about 4pm each day
cleaning the stove (works better than a shedder)

Once all that's done, yeah, might give it a go, if I can be bothered.

I no longer receive any notifications to update to windows10 after factory restoring. It just hangs on the Checking For Updates screen when I go to Windows Update.

MS are also crippling the Win7 update servers from time to time to make people's systems run slower, to add incentive to "upgrade".

We should just call it a downgrade instead of an upgrade.

Yeah, they just want everyone to install their new spyware package.

I gave in with the malware and bullshit years ago and swapped to Linux, much smoother sailing.

Linux is alright less targeted by hackers and probably by the government as well more work for them trying to break into a secure linux system vs a windows system although there are some distributions that are user friendly it's still pretty technical for the average joe.
