OP, that's a totally mind blowing situation. I too was ignorant to the reality of the "crazy cat lady" phenomenon, or at least to its extent. 52 fucking cats....

what is it with cats and crazies? You don't typically see crazies with 30 dogs in one house.

Im know im going to sound like an asshole here, but you should probably call animal control on her. Its inhumane.

Nah just 100 starving, aggressive, inbred dogs who end up eating their owners.

1000-2000 cases of animal hoarding are reported by the ASPCA every year, involving over 250,000 animals.

Cats should be illegal. They have no purpose and are not a companion. They run around creating ferel kittens
Fuck cats

No, this is toxoplasma I believe. I forget of it is a virus or bacteria. Millions have this, and it can cause mood changes in humans

Yes that's very ethical, cats should be illegal.

Cats can't be your companion? That's a crock of shit.

It might have been toxoplasmosis, but it seems like tapeworms were involved too. I don't remember.

There's some studies on this I think, they are thinking there is a chemical or something in cat urine that if you inadvertently ingest too much (bad hygiene when cleaning the litter box) it could be a catalyst to early onset dementia.

So... wear gloves or be sure to sanitize after cleaning the litter box.

My poor kitty is pretty recluse.

He hid behind the toilet all night last night, came out only after we went to bed to eat and run around.
Today we got him to move to the main bathroom, now he takes turns between hiding behind the water furnace and the cat carrier next to his litter box. The poor baby.

Be careful with direct eye contact honestly try to just avoid it all together for now. And make sure every move you make is deliberate. He/she doesn't trust no one for shit I'm sure after living with all of those other felines in such bad conditions. You have some work to do.

Interesting, can you explain that a bit more?
I am assuming it has something to do with dominance, but thought I'd ask anyways.

That is the hope, he originally fled into my master bedroom when we brought him home. Spent the night hiding behind my dresser before moving to the master bathroom. He at some point last night roamed the house and explored enough to find where his cat carrier was, and then made that his new home.

I just leave him the laundry room / bathroom with all his essentials. Try and get him accustomed to that room and comfortable enough to eat. As far as I can tell he hasn't eaten anything in nearly three days.

Though he could be eating his dry food and I just cant notice.

I mean after seeing his previous environment this behavior doesn't surprise me, I am confident he will come around.

Prolonged eye contact is considered a threat or yeah, a display of dominance. It's how they make threats towards other felines, and when a human does it they can definitely take it that way (not always). It's just important for a quick turn around on this guy that it doesn't see you as a threat. It will help him get more comfortable quicker if you make the right moves.

Yep. It's a dominance thing. Direct eye contact is basically a challenge. Blink deliberately and slowly. I'd also confine him to one room for a few days, let him explore every nook and cranny, and then let him out to the rest of the house. Gives the cat a "basecamp" type safe area to flee to if needed. Don't expect him to eat the first day or two, but always leave food and water out. When I got my feral rescue cat, he wouldn't eat unless the food bowl was in a sideways cardboard box he liked to hide in.

I would also avoid trying to pet him and stuff right away. Hold your hand out for him to sniff, and let him come to you if he wants. It's a long process.

Lol, cats are the worse. Should have got a dog.

My friends who are cat people always argue and describe this one cat they had who was awesome. The traits they describe are dog traits. It's like yeah, one cat might be cool if it acts like a dog.

A lot of people consider themselves dog people until they actually get a cat or realize that they're animals and like all other animals they each have unique personalities - some are honestly just assholes(tho if you leave them alone they'll leave you alone..usually), but most are honestly very amusing, odd creature.

Dogs are work and it's stupid to recommend them for everyone without knowing what that person's living situation is like. I see so many irresponsible dog owners it's ridiculous, puppies are great but unless you have the time and energy to invest in training them and ensuring they get proper exercise it's just unfair - and adult dogs still require more maintenance than cats do. The only dogs that are easy are elderly dogs, and no one seems to want them when they're looking for a dog, which is a shame.

All that aside, fuck you, I'm not a dog or cat person - I just like animals.

I was a dog person for ages, and then one day it just sorta clicked and
I understood cats.

they're interesting.

I don't think it would be a pet that I'd seek out, or would be a really great fit for my lifestyle, but I can appreciate the quality that they have thats unique to them.

don't pet them while on lsd though.
