Seems like they still use imperial for their roads, and I've heard plenty of Brits use the terms pints and stones to refer to liquid volumes and weights. I know that they use metric a little more than we do, however I'm assuming they are somewhere in the middle and not completely converted.

If there are any British people awake I'd like to know the depth of imperial usage these days. :lol:

1 milliliter of water weighs 1 gram.

Now you know how length, volume and mass are related

Oh, 1 calorie is the energy required to raise the temperate of 1 gram of water 1 degree celcius.

At least they are trying. There is no push in the States what so ever.

Have you ever tried to use the slug as a unit of force? It's equal to one pound-second squared per foot. It's completely bogus.

We used a bunch of crazy units, like cubits, when I took thermodynamics.

The metric system isn't exactly spotless either. I still want to know how it can make sense that the amount of energy required to raise a gram of water by one degree celsius is the same as the amount of energy required to accelerate such an arbitrary number of kilograms as 4.18 by one meter per second squared over the distance of a meter

(I know it's because calories are actually based on the specific heat capacity of water. I'm just making a point)

And why the hell is a liter equal to a cubic decimeter? Who uses decimeters?

Joules are a standard SI unit and calories aren't. The other kind of bullshit thing with calories is that when you're talking about food energy, a "calorie" is actually a kilocalorie.

And I'm pretty sure food energy is measured by joules in many metric countries. Calories really kind of go hand in hand with the imperial system, even though they are based on metric. It's almost like these measurements are chosen on the very merit of how arbitrary they are compared to some coherent alternative.

I checked a couple of food packages and apparently it's just calories here in Canada.


Most "official" measurements here are metric but some Imperial units are still common. People's heights are in feet and inches and weights are in pounds, except in medical settings. Meat and vegetables are advertised per pound (with the per kg price much smaller) but sold by kilograms. Road signs are 100% metric though.

The more I learn about the metric system the more I realize how the US system really makes no sense mathematically? A system based on 10 vs ?
Additionally the US is 1 of 3 countries that doesn't use the metric system. Good stuff

I am campaigning to bring imperial back to the world :hehehe: Since when do America's customs need to make sense before we force them onto the rest of the world?  Just consider this: 9/10 socialists prefer the metric system.  That is far too compelling to be written off as coincidence.

I'm pretty sure joules are standard at least in the EU. Canuckistan, in spite of its use of metric, seems to be inordinately influenced by American norms. On behalf of my half-braindead mouth-breathing national culture, I apologize for the inconvenience.

By using the metric scale and the mnemonic phrase:
King Henry Died Unexpectidly Drinking Chocolate Milk

Kilo Hecto Deca Unit (gram, liter, meter) Deci Centi Milli converting is simple.
Now converting to Imperial that's another thing..
