Question about Blewits

Has anyone here seen Blewits that don't smell of Anise but rather just smell like a typical store bought mushroom? All the Blewits I've found in central California have never had anything but a normal mushroom smell.

Everything else is spot on for them. Just not the smell.

How long have you been sniffing shrooms? C.nuda always smells awesomely sweet for me. howver I notice that people who are new to mushrooms say things "just smell like mushrooms" that blow my mind, like Lactarius fragillis and Tricholoma magnivelare. "smells like mushrooms" usually means smells like Agaricus, and edible Agaricus are said to smell of Anise. That may also be why. :shrug:

I've been at this for probably 8 years or so. Still have a lot to learn but making progress. I've smelled a lot of different mushrooms and seen the differences on most. For whatever reason these though just don't smell like anything but your basic store bought mushroom. I wish I could get a hold of  fresh Blewits that do smell that way. Also, the ones I've found just taste like store bought Agaricus bisporus.

This leads me to believe A). I either have a different strain, or B). I'm misidentifying this as a Blewit. Problem with B is it's pretty much dead on. Is there another mushroom that is exactly the same as Blewits that don't have that smell or taste?

There are purple species of Cortinarius. I'm shit at differentiating smells... everything usually smells like weed. I wanna see a pic!

Please post photos next time you find some.

Some people just can't smell/taste certain things, maybe its blewits for you?

Both times I've found them in the last month I had a camera malfunction. The place I go almost always has at least a few so next time I grab some I will be sure and get lots of pics. I was mostly curious if there is an obvious mushroom look alike I'm missing. It's not a Cort as the spore print is white. Thanks for the responses. I'll update next time I find them.
