Candidates on cannabis
by Dana Larsen (26 Jan, 2004)

US presidential hopefuls get rated on their med-pot stance.

As America gears up for a federal election in November, activists are pushing for medical pot to become a prominent campaign issue.

A New Hampshire based group called Granite Staters for Medical Marijuana has been tracking presidential candidates' statements on med-pot issues, and giving them a "report card" letter grade based on their support for patients' rights.

On the Republican side, President Bush gets an F from the Granite Staters for his "unrelenting assault on medical marijuana dispensaries in California." No surprise there. But how do the Democrat candidates rate on the issue?

The top grade of A goes to Dennis Kucinich, who has been quoted in the media as saying that he supports medical marijuana "without reservation." Kucinich has also called for a total rethinking of federal drug policies, emphasizing treatment over criminalization. Kucinich has described federal raids against med-pot dispensaries as "a sign of government gone wrong."

Carol Moseley Braun, former senator from Illinois, also got an excellent rating of A-. According to Granite Staters, she has "voiced support for federal legislation allowing seriously ill people to have medical marijuana, with their doctors' approval." She has also called for pot possession to be punishable only by a fine. However, while in government Braun did nothing to support medical marijuana.

John Kerry, Democratic Senator from Massachusetts, gets a B for telling the media that he supports a "scientific review" of medical pot, and that he would call for a "moratorium" on federal med-pot raids. Kerry has admitted to being a past pot smoker.

Richard Gephardt, Congressman from Montana, told Granite Staters that on the issue of med-pot, "states should determine the policy." However, Gephardt gets a B- because in 1998 he voted for a federal resolution opposing state efforts to legalize marijuana for medical use.

Former Vermont Governor Howard Dean rates only a C. He has said that, as president, he would order a one-year moratorium on federal med-pot raids, to allow the FDA to study the issue of medical marijuana. Yet despite this, and despite being a former toker himself, in 2002 Dean strongly opposed a Vermont bill which would have protected med-pot patients from arrest and jail.

Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman and North Carolina Senator John Edwards both received failing grades. Even though he admits to being a past toker himself, Edwards gets a D- because he has said it would be "irresponsible" to stop arresting med-pot patients. Lieberman has not given a solid response on the issue, but he got a D because in 1998 he co-sponsored a bill opposing efforts to legalize marijuana for medical use.

Because he has never made a public statement on the issue, Al Sharpton rates an "incomplete."

Granite Staters for Medical Marijuana encourages Americans to take action during this election, and "tell the presidential candidates that federal law should be changed." Their website provides resources and contacts to make it easy for armchair activists to get involved.

looks like the only viable candidate with a decent grade is Kerry...

Al Sharpton would probably get an A+ for being a current pot user. He's still dumb though, which leads back to my theory.

Good post on the canditates. I have a few typical liberal friends (i.e. they hate bush because he makes up words, and hes an educated white man who is conservative and has power) and most of them are going to choose which democrat they are going to vote for based on their marijuana stance. I really hope that, if you are uneducated about politics, you at least read up on more of what a candidate offers. If you want to vote democrat, do it because you support the candidate, not because you just want to get rid of bush, or because that canditate might make it easier for people to smoke grass.

Those are not the reasons people hate Bush, but since you live in fantasyland, I will give you a few of the reasons, from MY REPUBLICAN standpoint.

1. Supported renewal of assault weapons ban.

2. Proposes amnesty plan without any more regulation of the borders, causing a 15% increase in illegal immigration within 30 days of the announcement. Even more startling is the fact that terrorists are entering our country illegally through the borders, but this moron either does not think about that, or does not care (my guess is the latter).

3. Spending way over budget with an increase bureaucracy.

4. Promoting more social programs stemming from the federal government, such as “faith based initiative,” suggesting a more socialistic view of this country's evolution.

5. Broke from strict constructionist standards of constitution with the Patriot acts, completely obliterating due process.

6. Spreading more of our military all around the globe, with his insane expansionist vision of global intervention.

7. Spending all our money rebuilding a foreign government.

8. Ordered pre-emptive strikes on foreign governments, manipulating the masses with propaganda that had nothing to do with the real reasons we went to war, thus depriving the nation of a real, fair debate on whether or not war was needed.

9. More support and work through NATO, another world government oriented organization, thus breaking from Republican standards of United States sovereignty

I'm starting to become more and more impressed with Kerry. I think I might consider voting for him.

hey laugh all you want, the guy promotes socialist programs. now he wants marriage education for christ sakes. I'll do marriage education for free- women finally can choose whether or not to marry men, so they're not settling for cheating husbands, wifebeaters, verbal abusers, small penises and all the other shit they had to put up with before because they can earn a living now and make their own choices. Don't fuck around a lot, and never do it without birth control, condoms or whatever else you need to stifle that zygote. the end

Just because he's for empire doesn't mean that he can't be a socialist as well. FIY, George Bush has increased spending for social programs more than Bill Clinton, he increased spending on medicare, wants to send social security payments to illegal aliens, he has yet to veto ANY spending bill.

"faith based initiatieves"
The Taliban could have argued they were just doing that as well.

Interesting article infidel

Just wanted to make a relevant post on the topic by directing those who live in California and are registered voters to read my signiture and visit the links!  Judge James P. Gray is a very strong advocate of the reformation of our drug laws - hell he has a badass book nailing down all the legitamite reasons why we can't possibly be doing any worse than we currently are (many points are also covered in the video link below).

Anyways, just tryin' to get the word out as this candidate is very intelligent and from all my experiences of personal contact with him as well as reading and seeing public articles, he has exhibited excellent logic and would be a fantastic addition to our nation's governing body - CALIFORNIA SENATE ELECTIONS MARCH 2004!

While I do think that Clark would be a bit more palatable to those of the more moderate bent (Republicans,  Democrats and, of course, myself ), I think Kerry will also get my vote if he wins the Democratic nominations.
