SENATORS SUPPORT UNSHACKLING MEDICAL MARIJUANA RESEARCH
SENS. KENNEDY, KERRY JOIN YOU IN BACKING UMASS PROPOSAL
Both U.S. senators from Massachusetts, Edward M. Kennedy and John F. Kerry, have joined you in asking the government to approve a groundbreaking proposal to grow marijuana for FDA-approved medical marijuana research. Let's thank them by writing a letter or phoning their office.
Together with your faxes the senator's letter will help University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMASS), MAPS, the Drug Policy Alliance and others break past the government's monopoly on marijuana research. Hundreds of you faxed the Office of National Drug Control Policy encouraging them to recommend that the UMass license to produce marijuana for research be approved.
Senators Kennedy and Kerry agree with you that an independent source of supply of high-quality material is required before a realistic, privately-funded research program on the effects of medical marijuana can be initiated. In their Oct. 20 letter to the Drug Enforcement Administration - which approves and declines licenses to manufacture scheduled drugs - Senators Kennedy and Kerry criticized NIDA's "unjustified monopoly on the production of marijuana for legitimate medical research." They noted that "[f]ederal law makes clear that the ... bulk manufacture of Schedule I and II substances must be provided 'under adequately competitive conditions.' ... The current lack of such competition may well result in the production of lower-quality research-grade marijuana, which in turn jeopardizes important research."
Kerry is considered one of the leading contenders for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Say thanks! Call or write the senators!!!

You can leave a message for the senators with their front desk. Make sure that in addition to your message your address is given so that they can write back if they are inclined. Thank him for supporting an end to the government's strangle hold on medial marijuana research and for encouraging realistic, privately-funded drug development programs so that the medicinal effects of marijuana can be appropriately investigated.
(2) Write an email/letter
Writing a letter shows a congressperson how important you find the issue and provides written documentation of constituent feedback. Just a few lines will do. Make sure that you include your own address. When they receive your letter, it's very likely that they will respond to it with a letter of their own. When they do respond, let us know what they said by contacting us at email@example.com or fax it to us at 202/216-0803, attn: Bill Piper.
Addressing the letter:
The Honorable (full name) XXAddressXX
Dear Senator _______________, I would like to thank you for supporting an end to the government's strangle hold on medial marijuana research and for encouraging realistic, privately-funded drug development programs so that the medicinal effects of marijuana can be appropriately investigated. The U.S. should treat marijuana like any other drug and allow for unbiased research into its effects. Otherwise, the government will continue its shamefully hypocritical approach to marijuana. Please continue to support efforts to reform marijuana laws by sponsoring or co-sponsoring future legislation to allow open research and saner laws. Thank you for taking an affirmative stance.
