Check your system for the MyDoom Windows worm!
    #2278176 -

Win32.Mydoom.A (also known as W32.Novarg.A) is a mass-mailing worm that arrives as an attachment with the file extension .bat, .cmd, .exe, .pif, .scr, or .zip.

When a computer is infected, the worm will set up a backdoor into the system by opening TCP ports 3127 through 3198, which can potentially allow an attacker to connect to the computer and use it as a proxy to gain access to its network resources.

In addition, the backdoor can download and execute arbitrary files.

The worm will perform a Denial of Service (DoS) starting on February 1, 2004. It also has a trigger date to stop spreading on February 12, 2004.

In the past 24 hours, I've received roughly a billion trillion copies of the worm in my inbox. If you don't have antivirus software on your system, please download and run the Win32.Mydoom.A Removal Tool from Symantec. If you do have antivirus software, please update your definitions and run a full system scan. Once you're sure that your system is clean, be very careful opening e-mail attachments, even if they're from someone that you know. The worm spoofs the 'from' address of the e-mail so it may appear to be from anyone.

For more information about the worm, check out Symantec's Security Response.

Hope this helps someone,

-Y

Just as a warning: when the Symantec checker program is run it shuts down all instances of Internet Explorer (and other browsers supposedly), so make sure you don't have anything you want left open... open.

Thank for the heads up, Ythan!

I just saw that on the news. Thank God, I don't run Windows?. I run an old IMSAI 8080 with CPM as the OS (loaded via paper tape) -- it keeps me safe...

yeah, I've gotten about 20 virus-emails since last night as well (I have a pretty good anti-virus/good email client, so I'm clean). crazy how fast this thing is spreading.

while this is all bad and you should clear your computer of the virus, I can't say I'm really annoyed that it'll attack SCO

Yep gotta agree with Morrowind there. Of course it sucks that its gonna screw up peoples computers... but SCO gets what they deserve, the damn copyrighting bastards!
