South Korea gonna try to bring back the woolly mammoth and stuffz * 1
    #22599330 -

http://bigthink.com/ideafeed/south-korea-working-hard-to-bring-woolly-mammoth-back-to-life

:daaamn:

Just saw it on the news. If they actually succeed in this, and bring back to life an actual woolly mammoth, will dinosaurs be soon to follow? Hell we may have a real life Jurassic Park on our hands at some point.

discuss intelligently

or unintelligently or not at all, it's whatever

Ridiculous. From a scientific standpoint I'm sure the experience could be useful, but I'd love to see how well something like a Mammoth handles that kind of climate. It's biology might be too different for current flora, feeding it could be a chore. Then if they want it out in nature.. there's just such a host of issues with this that I think it's a waste of time and resources. But whatever, I'm not Korean, they aren't using my tax dollars.

theres been various efforts to bring back the mammoth over the years but nobody has ever managed it

it's all a big waste of time anyway, mammoths are boring... they need to stop pissing about and just get straight to the dinosaurs  :crankey:

There's been talk of this forever. First time I heard about it was probably over 10 years ago or more on a documentary from Discovery where they found a remarkably intact woolly mammoth frozen in a bunch of ice and excavated it and were talking about maybe using it's DNA to clone it and bring them back.

I say go for it, but do it large scale. I want to find out what one tastes like.

The elephants are going extinct and they are putting money into growing mammoths?  This is a complete waste of money. They should be trying to bring back dinosaurs or just protecting our living animals.

I think it is so cute that you think 10 years is forever.

The difference between this and resurrecting dinosaurs is that mammoths have extremely close living relatives.  They are called elephants.  We can use them as an incubator.  And we don't really need to resurrect dinosaurs.  They are among us.  They are called birds.

Wait are we 100% sure that's not a mammoth?  It's got to be at least part mammoth, right?

I'm only 30, and 10 was a conservative estimate. I'm pretty sure I watched it back when I was a young teen. That's like half a lifetime ago for me. It's all perspective, 1/3rd of my life is forever ago.

The one thing about perspective and years that always trips me up is that when someone talks about 10 years ago, I have to actually do the math to think of the actual year, because I always just assume they're talking about the 90's.

And come on, you telling me you wouldn't wanna try some Raptor or T-rex? I'd pay some ridiculous price to try it.

Another major difference is the quality of genetic material available for the extinct animal. They have found mammoths that have been frozen since the time they were alive. Good luck finding that with a T-Rex.

I have to say that I do not find the premise from Jurassic park completely impossible in regards to finding dino DNA.
