XFinity WiFi Hotspots...

So, my roommate left with the cable modem and I was searching around for wireless hotspots. There was a SSID xfinitywifi that was unlocked but went through a proxy for any browser request and showed their login page (and your MAC as a URL parameter). One of the options was for a free trial hour of WiFi; you had to put your email and zip code in, and it obviously didn't verify either. From my wireshark logs the only things it could be using to identify you are ARP, IP and possibly hostname (this would surprise me a bit because of potential collisions).
Gee this is a tough one...
I sign on, when time runs out: stop wifi, change MAC, get another free session :\
My device was originally manufactured by Apple and now it is MINERVA KOREA CO., LTD :V

That's the xfinity pineapple project, google it for more info. They are using customers cable modem/router to provide wireless hot spots for their customers. You can disable it on your account. I have my own cable modem and router so I don't have to worry about it.

Doesn't that draw bandwidth?

“Comcast’s newest Wireless Gateway broadcasts two WiFi signals. By default, one is securely configured for the private use of the home subscriber. The second is a neighborhood “xfinitywifi” network signal that can be shared. This creates an extension of the Xfinity WiFi network and will allow visiting Xfinity Internet subscribers to sign in and connect using their own usernames and passwords.”
Cable is shared bandwidth anyway.

Oh, okay so it's probably the gateway servers they are talking about (like if you type route, or route print if in windows). That wouldn't really affect people's individual connections, but the node as a whole.

I think it's the wireless gateway/cable modem in the customer's home.
The big thing is that people are posting the instructions to make fake ones and capture your data.

you know, reading up on it yeah, it seems that way:
Quote:
Don't rent a box (Comcast calls them "gateways") from Comcast.
that is a horrible idea
for one thing, security wise; it would be possible to modify the device to sniff out packets
that isn't even necessary if you create a hotspot with that ssid and simply mirror the page
but are they doing this in places like SF and NYC where channel saturation is already bad?
if so do they have a remedy? :\

These kinds of remedies?

No, to shut it down where it is creating a problem with saturation.
I'm sure 95+% of people aren't even aware it's there.
