macbook wifi
    #13778376 -

i'm using wifi through my macbook at home, but it seems like it has a weak connection; even though i got full bars. Every once and a while it will stop loading a page, as if it froze or something. I know it's not literally disconnected since the disconnected page doesn't pop up. And it only starts working again once i turn off my AirPort (wifi) and turn it back on again. But, that's really becoming a big hassle.

I was just wondering if anyone has seen these problems before. also, what are the chances that it's a potential virus or something of the sort?

Does it do it on more than one wifi hotspot?  (i.e. Have you ruled out the router rather than the computer.)

What version of the OS are you running?  Is it fully patched?

Do you have any third party software installed, such as little snitch, that hooks into the networking services?

Have you reset your PRAM?

Are there any messages in console.app (found in applications/utilities) related to the problem... (they would show up in the log when the problem occurs).

If you put the computer to sleep, then wake it, does the wireless network come back, or do you have to do a complete reboot?

When the wireless disappears, does the airport card still show up in system profiler?

The above questions will help rule out software as the issue.  If it is a hardware problem, most likely cause is the airport card.  The logic board and the display assembly (on newer mac laptops) can also cause this sort of problem, but very rare in both cases.

no it's only at home....

hmmm
it could definitely be the router

i got Mac OS X V10.6.5
no 3rd party software
and yes the airport card still shows up in my system profiler
and no i don't have to reboot after it sleeps
i might just have to toggle on and off the AirPort to get the signal up and running again (even though it's depicted as if it IS connected)

If it only does it at home... I would suspect the router over the computer.

One thing to check, under system pref, network... what location are you using?  Do you have one for "at home" (not by that name) or are you using automatic?  If you have something other than automatic, delete it and see if that helps.

I have had this problem repeatedly when using cheap old routers. I would have to same thing with my MBP. It only happened at home. I upgraded to an AirPort extreme, albeit expensive, and the problem went away. I am sure another router would have worked, but the AirPort Extremes are pretty nice and good reviews from people who actually use Apple products.

The interface is extremely nice and integrated with the Mac. Updates appear within the system update among other features. It's nice if you want a reliable router that fully integrates into the system. It has a USB port that will broadcast an external HD over Bonjour for remote backups and file sharing. This is nice because it removed the need to setup another computer to do the same thing while consuming far less electricity.
