I'm buying a MacBook
    #7567203 - 10/27/07 04:23 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Good choice? Anything I should know before hand?

I've been a PC user up until now and I want to get a laptop without needing to use Vista as well. It doesn't seem like thats an option so I want to give Apple a chance.

enjoy your Mac

after I made the switch, I discovered how much Micro$oft Windows blows (in my opinion)

leopard is good times.  little bit differnt GUI and soem say it runs faster. also has a cool mosaic screen saver like those bob marley posters of album covers that make his face. adn leopard will be with your macbook. the core animation will make soem cool looking stuff right away   if it is possible you might want to wait till after teh states thanksgiving or around xmass to buy. rumored new macbooks that will be brushed aluminum. or some sort of ultra portable one. (maybe with some sort of touch screen something) Days Since Update 168 (Avg = 202) it might be worth it just for a price drop or a bump in speed if the tottal revamp doesnt come. but it will hey want to get rid of "white".

Yes, mixed feelings. Performance wise it is much better than Tiger for most things. I did notice some audio issues playing DVDs or AVIs under load which never happened in Tiger, but everything else was positive from a performance standpoint. External USB disk IO is improved, memory management is much better, etc.

From the GUI, I would say they took a step backwards. Stacks are 100% useless as currently implemented, though they have potential. Time machine is pretty neat, but doesn't work with file vault (very well). Spaces are nice, but I haven't gotten in the habit of using them. The 3D dock, transparent menu bar, the default background, the finder icons, and many other changes that Apple made are butt ugly. The only GUI change they made that I like is the unified window look.

I have to agree, all of the changes from Tiger are neat but they feel more like toys than practical. Ill get used to them at some point, but i would have to have real use of them in order to do that.

I LOVE the Expose features in Tiger, use it hundreds of times everyday, and with the ability to "pull back" and see all the current open windows/porgrams, Spaces seems useless. Stacks are just kinda weird, dont see the uses in them yet. 3D dock and transparent are more eye candy than anything.

At this point in time GUI changes arent going to be revolutionary untill we have a better more efficient human interface. Im thinking something along the lines of dual screen touch pads, motion recognition, Reactable/reacTIVision like stuff.

GUI's are becoming really stramlined and efficient, but the mouse/keyboard is on its way out the door. Cant wait to see/use the next gen stuff.

For me, the hardest part of switching from Windows computers to Macs was relearning keyboard shortcuts, but they come pretty easily after a bit.

Oh, but, I would recommend getting a 2-button mouse if your Macbook will be your primary computer. Just a thought.

Good luck!

Yea get a two or more button mouse, there are addons you can get that will partion the touch pad, aka, scrollbar on the side, buttons in the cornners, ect. But a good mouse is still hands down better than a pad, depending on location of course.

The Mighty Mouse is a nice mouse over all, but i still prefer a good Ligitech hands down. The MM has 4 buttons and 360 scrolling, but its hard to use the side button, since both sides need to be pressed in unison. Sometimes the main left and right buttons cross. Aka, you push left button, but the right button command happens, and you cant use both L&R buttons at the same time, found that out when i used to play WoW.

I have a Logitech MX518, 8 buttons total, 5 for commands, 2 for sensitivity, and one for whatever. Its a weird button, in Win, its for an alt+tab command, or a few others, in mac its for my dashboard, dosent seem to bind in games. I love it, great gaming and overall mouse.

do you ever run into the problem of not being able to install a program you want because of mac software incompatibility?
