i have been considering sampling this species, though i have no great expectations for the flavor.
would anybody here with experience with these care to give me some input?

just a question...if you have no great expectations for the flavour, then why even bother with it?

because i am a big fan of blewits. if these are similar, and simply not quite as good in taste or texture, they may still be worth picking. i see a lot of these in the fall.

I haven't eaten them. I tend to avoid Clitocybes because we don't have many of the OK ones here.
Arora lists it as edible but says he hasn't tried it.
A lot of the Clitocybes seem to cause mild problems by being fairly indigestible, so be cautious (I'm sure you will, anyway).
Let us know if they're any good at all.
Happy mushrooming!

well, i'm not as likely to try them at this point. i managed to find about 10lb of C. nuda earlier today [of which i had to leave 2/3 behind due to maggot/mite infestation]
i'm on vacation up north at the moment, so i won't be able to come back and check the patch again till next season, but i'll have enough dried [pluss the L. sulphureus and Pleurotus sp. i intend to go get tomorow] to keep me satisfied for a while.
i will try to find some other species aswell .
i wish i had a digicam.

i have only eaten nuda and odora var. pacifica . does tarda have that smell? like blewits i mean... i have trouble feeding blewits to people, and i have trouble getting my girl to even think about including them in a meal. she thinks they taste like dirt. my friends girl says the same. insipid and earthy. but i have had good meals with them. the ones i have unearthed around cedars, sequoias, and small pines have seemed sweet, while those i have found around broadleaved trees, in the mulch from last years leaves, have been more dirty and less sweet. any comments about that from anyone? also, have you got any pics of your tarda?

yeah, i know how much balls using dialup can suck [by the way, the color on those pics is way the hell off. i tried to change the levels to get it more accurate, but only managed to make it different, no better, no worse ] as far as the smell of C. tarda, they smell earthy like blewits, but not with much of that strange fruity smell [as aurora describes it], nor are they as pungent in general. i have not noticed a difference in the taste of C. nuda directly related to needle/leaf litter preference but it does vary quite a bit from c ollection to collection, so i can see where substrate might be an influence. anyone who described the taste of blewits as "insipid" would not be invited to a second dinner in my house , jk.
