clitocybe nuda?
    #2155737 - 12/03/03 05:19 PM (13 years, 9 days ago)

I found a patch of lavender color mushrooms, which fit the description of a Clitocybe nuda and also looks like the pictures I've seen. They were growing in old woodchips, and the spore print came out a very light yellow. Are these safe for consumption? If so, how do they taste? I've heard they're good, but need to be cooked.

The spore print should be a pale pinkish tan. If you're verifying color or identification, make sure you're making the spore print on white paper. Also, try to use sunlight (instead of incandescent light) so that a colored light doesn't distort the color.

Unfortunately, Blewits are not very common here near Denver, so I haven't found any that were in good enough shape to eat.

The reports I have indicate that cooking them then freezing them is the best way to preserve them, and that drying works well (just not quite as good).

As with any new mushroom species, eat only a small amount the first time, and save some specimens fresh in the refrigerator. The small amount is so that, if you're going to get ill from eating them, you don't get as ill. The specimens in the refrigerator are so that, if you get sick, you can take them with you to the emergency room so that an expert mycologist can be consulted to confirm what you ate. If it turns out that they are Blewits, then everybody will calm down. If it turns out that you misidentified an Inocybe for a Blewit (there are some similar ones), then they'll have an idea of what sort of illness you'll be facing.

Happy mushrooming!

Well, I picked a few, and the spore print was a little old, and not in natural light. I'll have a pic in a minute of the mushrooms. Either way, they're very interesting looking.

Here's a pic...the color is a bit off but in most you can see the lavender cap.

Looking at your photo, the most convincing feature is the gills. They should be a pale pinkish, crowded, and notched, which yours are.

The most obvious possibility for a misidentification with those specimens would be a Collybia, for example Collybia butyracea. They usually have very white gills, rather than the pinkish tints yours show.

Another feature you can check is that Clitocybe nuda often (not always) has a faint fruity odor. The lookalikes won't have that odor, although some Blewits won't either.

Those definitely aren't one of the dangerous lookalikes, which are concentrated in Cortinarius and Inocybe. The other lookalikes are at worst mildly poisonous, meaning that they cause indigestion. A taste (cooked) should help to decide. Blewits should have a fairly strong flavor, and the lookalikes should not.

In any event, make sure you try only a small amount at first, to be cautious.

Happy mushrooming!

Word on the street is that they're pretty good. I think in your other thread a few people commented on the taste.
