In December I will be backpacking in Vietnam for four months.

I am immensely exited, feel as though it will be a great learning experience! any advice from those have been backpacking before? anyone aware of the drug laws in Vietnam?.. I have a feeling they will be strict unfortunately. I look forward to plunging myself into a new culture, visiting Mỹ Sơn , trekking through the jungles & much more :sunny:

isn't Vietnam one of those "don't get caught doing drugs" type places, or is that Singapore?

The only advice I have with backpacking is to pack light and have a great pair of boots.

How long are you gonna be backpacking for?

Both of them have pretty harsh drug laws.

I never understood how Southeast Asia had such strict drug laws while also supposedly having tons of heroin and opium floating around.

Opium dens are still very common, heroin just comes with the territory. Crime takes over is everywhere no matter what the consequences.

I've been wanting to go to Vietnam. I live in a predominantly Vietnamese area and at my dojo I have made lots of friends from there, as well as my sensei being the head of a number of dojos over there. Aikido dojos being very much a family, I would probably have lots of instant friends if I went there.

you'll be able to be get high, don't worry about it. some bars have hidden menus that include stuff like mushrooms and dmt, but yeah, don't get caught.

Both, I'd say singapore would be worse though. Singapore seemed very harsh on drugs and the cops are very strict in general. Singapore is a lot richer that Vietnam so I would assume the cops would be much harder to bribe.

In saying that, you'll be able to score weed, heroin, and most likely meth in Vietnam, just be careful and don't be a dick about it. The heroin is stupidly pure so be VERY careful if you try it. If it is anything like Cambodia, don't buy coke if offered, because it will be strong heroin that will kill you with one line.

If you're going to buy drugs, obviously don't travel with them on you. Try not to carry them anywhere if possible. Carry money or your bank card at least, in case you need to pay a bribe.

I might even be there around that time OP, I'll hit you up if I am.

Oh, and another thing. If you ever travel on a bus, KEEP ALL YOUR VALUABLES ON YOU IN A DAY BAG, and keep that on your lap. I mean, anything that you don't want to lose, like passports, computers, phones… keep on you. Even then, put a pad lock on that bag too, and make sure you keep your fucking eyes on it all the time, which can be hard when traveling. Even a padlock won't really do shit, they train little kids to pick locks and steal shit from your bags.

If you are on a night bus, sleep hugging that bag like it owes you money. Obviously try to stick with other backpackers so you can look out for each other. It's always awesome teaming up with random backpackers to help each other out, even if it's just for a train ride or something.

I met a few people that had had everything stolen this way.

Get yourself a lonely planet guide. The shoestring guides are good for traveling on a budget.

http://wikitravel.org was really handy for me, it tells you most things you need to know about a place, including all the local scams and shit you need to be wary of.
