Shop's mushrooms are magic - and totally legal

Shop's mushrooms are magic - and totally legal

By Ben Ashford

MAGIC mushrooms are being sold across the counter at a Croydon store - and it's perfectly legal.

A bag containing 10g of Mexican cubensis magic mushrooms - bearing the warning "can cause hallucinations" - can now be bought for as little as ?5 from a specialist store in Church Street.

Ken Birch, chief supplier and owner of Up in Smoke, is taking advantage of a loophole in British law that allows the legal possession and sale of the mushrooms while they remain in their natural state.

He grows his stock inside the shop and advises all his customers that, if dried, processed or prepared for consumption, their purchase would become a class A drug.

Ken's staff operate a strict policy of selling to over-18s - and as yet police have made no moves to stem the supply.

"I've spoken to the Home Office in great depth and as long as they're fresh and unprepared it's OK," said Ken, 38.

He added: "We've had a broad spectrum of customers, mostly aged between about 25 to 40, and a lot of people in office clothing.

"We make sure they are aware of the possible effects and we advise them to test their responses with small doses at first. Most people have reported pleasant effects and mild euphoria."

Famed for their mind-bending qualities, magic mushrooms have long been the nibble of choice for hippies, psychedelic explorers and those determined enough to scour the countryside on the promise of a six-hour "trip".

Their consumption can be traced back to the Inca civilisations of South America who described them as "the flesh of Gods".

They were rediscovered in the swinging sixties when, along with LSD, they became the drug of choice for the hippie movement before they were outlawed in 1968.

The powerful "trip" experienced by users is caused by psilocybin, which can cause mind-altering effects and hallucinations.

While some users report profound spiritual insights, health advisors warn that mushrooms can trigger fear, paranoia, and terrifying visions.

But the threat of a bad trip was not enough to put off Sabina Khan, 25, who bought a ?5 bag to munch at her Selhurst flat.

"I ate just one mushroom and it tasted OK but a bit mouldy," she said.

"It took about 20 minutes to work but suddenly I became really light-headed and began noticing things my eyes would never usually see.

"Things became really strange when I began a conversation with my dog - he told me he felt cooped up and wanted to get out of the house."

Vincent Godber, a Coulsdon-based wine merchant aged 55, was equally keen to try out the Mexican.

He admitted to sampling the drug in the late-seventies and said he never imagined there would come a time when it could be bought across the counter.

"Back in the old days you had to get out an ordnance survey map and traipse around the Welsh countryside to get hold of mushrooms," he said.

A statement issued by the Home Office confirmed it was not illegal to possess magic mushrooms in a raw form, but warned that possession of processed mushrooms could lead to a seven-year jail term and an unlimited fine.

Croydon Police are thought to be looking into the legal issues but a spokesman stressed they had no reason to believe the shop was acting illegally.

Ken has no plans to abandon his fungi side-line and for the foreseeable future the discreet notice propped up among the herbal highs, tobacco papers and glass pipes will still read "Mexican cubinsis on sale".

He added: "Personally I would not encourage anyone to take drugs but since the beginning of time people have taken some sort of stimulant or another.

"And most people who are interested in mushrooms seem to adopt a sensible approach - that's more than can be said for some of the people going out in Croydon each weekend and taking vast quantities of alcohol."

I hope the mushroom users in the UK continue to be responsible and approach the mushroom experience with respect. I'd hate to see some immature stupid people ruining it for everyone else.  :mushroom2:

This perfectly shows how wrong it is to make mushrooms illegal. Look at how long they have been 'legal' in the UK without anything bad happening. Hopefully someone will metion that when they try to close the loophole when there is one bad story.

Wow, that's great to hear. You guys are very lucky.

Little expensive(5 euros for 10 wet grams which equal 1 dried gram) but no more expensive than what you'd find on the black market.

Yes, they are a bit pricey, but the worst fear for me is, now that
head shops are selling fresh shrooms, its only a matter of time before
the laws change, and legal cultivation will be lost here :frown:

Rhat is a horrible rip-off prince for shrooms in any country, although they sell for $10 a gram fried. while one fresh ounce of liberty caps (2-3 doses usually sell for $10 to 20.00 dollars an ounce. Fresh cyans go for 10-25 dollars a fresh ounce with anywhere from 4 to 10 or more doses in a fresh ounce.

England and Amsterdam charge too much for their legal shrooms.

Why doesn't the price go down? I mean typically if someone is ripping people off then someone else just comes along and sells cheaper, so the only way for the ripoffs to keep selling is to lower there prices also...?

Its easy enough to find shops selling reasonably prices shooms. 25p per Gram of Cubensis is pretty reasonable IMO. As for legality, I don't think things will stay like this much longer. All it will take is some 13 year old kid getting in a state and headlines such as 'Osama Loves Magic Mushrooms' will be all over the tabloids. I give it a year at most :frown:
