Hypnotism. Fake or real?

So, I used to think hypnotism was bullshit, like psychics and card readers are. I used to think the person being hypnotized was involved with the act.

But recently, I was giving my dog some medicine and America's Got Talent was on. A hypnotist came on and asked to do his bit on Howie Mandel. Before the bit happened, I was like "oh boy, this should be a joke", but something really weird happened that I couldn't immediately call bullshit on anymore. Here's the video..



Basically, I was pretty impressed if not blown away. Howie said he went to therapy after this event so I don't think it's bullshit, and a special, secret act between Howie and the contestant.

This made me look up other hypnotists and wonder what's going on in the brain when this type of shit happens. It's like someone figured out how to hack the human brain.

If someone was reaaally good at hypnotizing, I wonder if they could hypnotize you without you knowing. Like, in a conversation, go through the motions of the process and subtly hypnotize someone. And to take it to conspiracy levels, what if governments or the military have ever used such "powers" for kidnapping, assassination, etc. Don't think they haven't already looked into such programs (MK Ultra).

I literally lack the ability to believe it's real and the only thing that could give me the ability to believe it is, is if I experienced it.

That used to be my take, too. But after looking up various videos of people hypnotizing random people on the street, I don't think it's impossible.

Like these people, they're complete average joes on the street with no acting career and I feel like yhey can't bullshit this...


I think I'd be too insecure to be hypnotized. Tricking the brain like that is just weird as fuck.

But if it was real imagine the possibilities. Now that could be good or bad but I for one would sign up to be hypnotized to get rid of my anxiety before I start talking to the doctor about medication for it.

In the movies and shit sure, but in reality they aren't unaware of their true past and there is no trigger that activates them. They just pose as normal citizens of whatever country and try to build up their network.

I personally wouldn't say hypnotism is REAL, but i would say everybody has specific buttons that when pressed, cause a reaction you could predict? IDk how to explain it, not every hypnotist out there is legit, probably very few, but i refuse to believe something lile the human mind cant be controlled. I mean i feel lile you could almost argue drugs are a form of hypnotism?

Idk what to thunk of all this honestly, i really wanna see the video though.:lol:

This is pretty much my stance, too. The one being hypnotized has to be open to it. If it's the power of suggestion, maybe being "hypnotized" is a sign of ignorance and lack of awareness. Maybe that's why the really religious people act like they are "possessed" and when the get exorcisms at church, they are acting it all out like it's really happening (due to lack of awareness and ignorance that demons aren't real, and more of a metaphor).

I wonder if I could be hypnotized by the best, though. I'm quick to call scam and bullshit when I see it, but this has me scratching my chinny chin chin.

I've heard some of the hypnotist say it can be used in beneficial ways. Like stop smoking or lose weight, but I wonder if it can do mental things like erase fears, create confidence, or any mental changes. Who knows though...

I mean, I don't trust them 100% but lately I've been wondering because the human brain is very powerful and who's to say it can't be hacked like the computer it is?

Hypnotism is suggesting that you are going to suggest something that people will obey. Some people just eat it up.

"you can do that?!" unconscious: *well I guess I'd better obey*

Placebo is reality though if you make it so (as near everyone knows here). It is a well documented phenomenon and has a pretty firm place in the medical world. It legitimately works for some, but not for others.

It's pretty sensationalized and absurd though and nothing like what you've seen in the movies, on TV, or in magician performances. That's 100% staged.

Good input. Agreed, placebo is very powerful. I'm aware of it's use in the medical world which is a great trick to have in the bag for testers.

I don't know if it's 100% staged, though. Sure it's not REAL, but these people are actually putting themselves through a "hack", if you will.

Like I mentioned in my reply to Occulate, think about the people who you see getting exorcisms at church. On the ground, flopping around like a fish. Those people are basically brainwashed, if not hypnotized.

But Howie Mandel looked completely lost while being hypnotized and after, so if he was acting then that was pretty damn good. I still can't get over that.. He truely looked like a different person, almost like someone on lots of drugs.

Anyway, I won't be back in this thread for a while but if anyone replies I'll respond back later tonigh..

I was at a fair once and there was a "hypnotist". I was one of the people they picked to go on stage. The picked the ones that seemed the most eager and excited to go up there, signifying that those people would be more likely to follow along rather than the boring skeptical. I can tell you this - it was all 100% entertainment, no one was actually hypnotized and everyone just went along like a game. It was fun I guess :shrug:

OP; conversational hypnosis is real and covert.  NLP stands for neurolinguistic programming.  Check it out, looks like Obama utilizes some principles in his speeches... it's not just for making sales, getting laid or drunk without drinking...

Find it difficult to believe, practice it anyways and be amazed; and protected from those who may attempt to use it against you.
