Weird Voicemail, Maybe ID Theft Scam?

I received a phone call last night from a Colorado area code which I didn't recognize so I just let it go to voicemail.

Just checked it and it was a woman saying:

"I am so and so from a legal mediation firm calling about an urgent matter regarding an open case with your name and social security. Call us back at this number or further legal action will be taken immediately. This is your final notice"

I just tried calling back and it landed on a personal cell phone voicemail box. Not one from a business (legal mediation firm) as I was expecting.

She did not say what the name of her firm was nor used my name in the voicemail. Or the last 4 of my social for that matter. Just that it was regarding "me".

This whole thing is weird considering I don't know anyone in CO (except for some of you guys here) and, I don't know. Just seems super sketchy.

Any idea what this could be about?

I'm thinking it might be an ID theft scam as I've had a few phone calls in the past year from random numbers across the US trying to get me to recite my full name and social for other reasons (i.e. lowering credit card debt which I have none). Obviously I told them in the past to fuck off.

Edit: She said her name was Julie Hyman (or Hymen) and the area code is 303 if any of you guys can help me dig up some information about this. Thanks.

I say post the # and we call and leave voicemails from a sweepstakes to The U.S. attorney generals office. And make the voicemails as long as possible.

I used prankowl.com to fuck with them for a good hour straight. I hit them up with the "illegal pornography" recording and their reaction was just great.

I  just baited them with I'm attorney John Rosenblatt and left a fake office# So hopefully they have my real # and start blowing up my phone. That buys me some time to get creative.

If I didn't have limited long distance I'd be going fullblown Jerkyboy on their ass. I don't think it will scare them but a cellphone DDOS attack from a drug forum would be pretty funny.

I get those scam numbers all the time. Didn't know u could call em back tho.. :uptosomething:

It's a shame we as a species still have to deal with this type of shit like phone ads, or just ads in general. U'd think we'd use our intelligence to end world hunger but instead we use it for get rich quick schemes. How fucking pathetic is that..

I get crap like that all the time. Now days when the phone rings I say "oh shit, another scammer" and it almost always is. I never pick up the phone if I don't recognize the person and in fact I pick up the receiver and drop it again to cut off the call so I don't waste my answering machine on it. It cost me a whole $15 and I don't want to fill it up with spam.

Same thing with emails, a "hey you" type email from " member services" or "card services" saying someone has accessed your account so click on this fake link and give us all your info so we can steal from you. Or from paypal, only it isn't or your bank or some bank. Or they have a shipment waiting for you and you need to click a link and download something so you get your shipment. Shipment of rob all your info and passwords.

I'm surprised anyone is still dumb enough to fall for that shit but they wouldn't do it if no one took the bait. Hey, I just won millions in a lottery I never entered. All I have to do is give them my bank info and they will send it to me. Soon as that and the Nigerian prince comes through, i'll be rich.

The thing that upsets me most about this is that they target elderly people that do fall for this and lose the little money they have.

We for the most part here are better informed and don't fall for this fuckery, but from the reports I've read online about these particular scammers is that they specifically call numbers in areas that are known to have a large percentage of the population over 65.

Even though we can't put them in jail we can try and scare them, or at the very least make them have a bad day.

Try out prankowl.com. There's some awesome pre recorded calls you can send out to the number I posted. It records the conversation so you can play it back (or post it here for some lulz). Some of the scammer's reactions were truly hilarious. Especially when I used the "illegal pornography" recording. It sounded like they were about to shit their pants. lol

If you end up doing it, put your caller ID as area code 954 or 561 which are the two counties they are targeting here in FL.
