My boss has the shingles-- anybody ever had this illness?

My nutty professor looking boss comes in handing us his iPhone loaded up with a pic of him and his big red blotchy rashy back.

First off, eww.

Second, goddam, he looked like he got caught doing someone's wife and got shot up with frozen paintballs all in the same spot.

Third, why does he think I want to know he has a disease and want to see it? Shingles is a form of herpes - you better get  your old wrinkly thang away from me! 

On top of all this he is all twisting and trying not to scratch - crying like a chihuahua getting stuck by a Great Dane. I had to hear about this crap every 10-15 mins and everyone could see that I was getting irritated.

Me: Look nigga, you fixing to get all of us infected, take your ass home- I ain't playin.!
Boss:  it- it's not contagious unless you haven't had the chicken pox.

Me:  sorry to be disrespectful, but you need to carry your ass away from me or I quit.

Boss: whoooa- wait a minute!

Co-worker:  Shingles?  (Grabs her purse, shoulder bag, tosses her phone and keys into them and jets.

Boss:  I'll be working from home the rest of the day.

Hell no.

Anyone had this before? He send 4 bitching emails talking about how it hurts.

I've never had it, but you guys are being ignorant about it. It's not "herpes" as in HSV 1 or 2, it's caused by chickenpox, which, yes, is a form of herpes, but EVERYONE has it already.

I watched my grandmother go through it, it's extremely painful and consumes your mind from not being able to itch so deep in your skin.

And no, this guy isn't spewing herpes out everywhere and you're not going to get it from being around him, touching things he touches, or even touching him. Grow up. It's like being scared to be around someone with HIV.

I had shingles at 19.  I spent so long living on 2-3 hours of sleep a night at best that my immune system failed me and the worst rash of my life came abruptly.  I didn't have the itchy sort of rash often associated with shingles.  I had a deep soreness instead.  It felt as if someone had mercilessly beat my ribcage with a baseball bat.  My nipples were so sore it was an ordeal simply to wear a shirt.

Things got better after the acyclovir did it's work.  It wasn't til later I came to find out that my great grandfather also felt soreness rather than itchiness when he had shingles.


Edit:  also, what Rustifer said.  Don't treat your buddy with shingles as a pariah, that's just fucked up and ignorant.

Ok so like you guys said, we scaled it back and learned it's not contagious unless we are in direct contact. I feel sorry for the guy now because he really can't do anything but wait out the heeling process. He says the pain is in his legs but his back has the rash. Nothing is wrong with his legs. That has to be a pretty awful thing to go thru. He can't sleep and is worried that he will feel like this for 30 days. There is nothing he can do but take pain meds. He actually was prescribed pain meds so I know it's as bad as all you say it is.

The worst part is that he cannot drink while on the healing meds.  It's a pretty raw deal, but he got out of jury duty because the judge had it before. He said it also can re-occur. What a strike of luck.

If you have had chickenpox then you're already infected. If you've had the chickenpox vaccine, then you are immune.

I had a mild case of shingles a year ago
A patch of crusty scabs about the size of a half dollar and a little comet tail of pustules stemming from it.
It was mild to pretty annoying
and all shingles are is the chicken pox virus reactivated when you are an adult.
In fact, I feel sorry for anyone who hasnt had chicken pox.
Shingles could be absolutely horrific if you get a huge case of it,
luckily I did not.

I had shingles when I was 15, I chuggeed half a Monster, and then passed out. I woke up with a terrible itching sensation on the side of my face!

I had shingles across my upper lip all the way to my left ear. It was pretty damn horrible. Not to mention the people who would scream herpes even after I told them it was shingles, and that's just a chickenpox recurrence.

I didn't think I had shingles until the doctor told me. I just thought I somehow caught herpes.

Moms used to have chicken pox parties when I was a kid.  If one kud got it they'd get all the other kids together to contract it.  The idea being that its supposedly relatively harmless to get as a child, then you are immune.

I had the chickenpox shot when I was about 11 or 12. I had never had it before that time and doctors were afraid if I were exposed it would be really bad. I guess the older you get, the more extreme the cases are.

I'll never get shingles, haha. But the shot hurt sooooo bad. Right into the muscle of your arm and I could feel the vaccine course through my body. I felt like I was going to pass out! Worth it though I guess.

I got them when I was 12. Caused by stress or a low immune system. It was rare for my age it usually happens when you're older. They are not contagious unless you've never had the chicken pox then you can catch the chicken pox from a person with shingles.

The fuck is with the vaccine you have a 99%+ chance of not developing chicken pox at all, and those that do have a much less severe case compared to what most people before it had to go through.

Also you will never get shingles unless you've developed chickenpox at some point in your life. Even then, the small percentage of people who do develop it from the vaccine, also have a much lower chance of ever developing shingles.
