Actually, no, they are not paid above minimum. The minimum wage laws of most provinces have a alternate rate for workers who receive gratuities.

I only tip if the service is astounding. Impress me or you're not getting a red cent.

I don't give many tips. Maybe once or twice a year.

Though I'll occasionally tip the pizza guy since we're technically out of their range of places they serve.

I've worked in the food industry. Most servers don't deserve a tip, so they're not getting one from me.

Do you eat at the same places regularly? They remember good tippers and bad tippers alike. Even if you don't get the same wait staff, they do talk to each other.

Everything you have said is exactly true.

Anyway, I was talking about hearing my FRIENDS bitch about not getting the tips that they wanted. Going on facebook or whatever and reading my server friends' posts on getting shitty tips. All they do is walk the food to the table, bring you refills, bring extra salad dressing, and so forth. I think the only difficult thing they do is having to remember everything, which is more difficult if you smoke weed.

Sorry, but it's true, servers are just walking conveyer belts. I'm not saying they don't deserve tips but at the same time, most of them are not even worth tipping. I NEVER eat out but when I do, I go someplace where I don't have to tip.

Whenever I hear anyone bitch about tips, I think to myself, "Why don't you get a damn job that doesn't rely on tips? Or why don't you get a federal grant and/or scholorship to go to college and better your life so you can get a better job?" Serving tables and retail jobs are just peasant jobs, surprise surprise.


Being a server doesn't even require any skills or education. Hell, you don't even need a high school diploma. The cooks are the one's who actually do all the work.

Anyway, it's just really annoying, either get a damn job that doesn't rely on tips or quit bitching about it. There are plenty of jobs that don't require any skills that these people can take where they don't have to worry or bitch about tips.

Let me ask a question: If I buy a $400 bottle of wine, should I tip more than if I would have ordered a $30 bottle of wine? The same amount of work is required to pour the bottle.

The practical answer to your question is if you can afford to buy a 400 dollar bottle of wine, tipping a bit more shouldn't be an issue anyways.

no generally they are paid WELL below min. wage.
If you do not tip and continue to go the same restaurant, the staff WILL fuck with your food and you will get shitty service and never understand that its your shitty tipping thats getting you such shitty service.

I know this from experience, I was a server for a few years.

If we had someone that tried to be a 'regular' yet tipped under 10% every time, lets just say we made sure he/she didn't come back to our restaurant more than a few times.

You tip 10% or less consistently at the same spot, your going to get 10% service.

Funny thing is, you could always tell the 10% or less tippers by their actions.

They try to make you look bad either by drowning themselves with whatever drink they got in hopes that they will get an 'empty' cup and blame it on you. They will be very demanding about things (probably again in an attempt to make you look bad in order to validate such shitty tip) and will seem to not be enjoying themselves for whatever reason.
