most places add in a 15% gratuity on parties of 6 or more, hell, some add in the
gratuity regardless of the number, and to be honest, they are doing you a favor
because they could stiff you on the tip altogether

Welll I worked at a shitty restaurant that didn't allow us to add gratuity bc of "tax reasons" or some bullshit like that. Which is basically why I quit. Also, black people are the worse fuckin tippers ever

I know how much musicians and baristas love manual labor, but it pays the bills.

Yeah, I don't really get this either.  You can make like $300+ in a night serving at a decent restaurant.  Sure, sometimes you make shit, but that's part of the job.  That said, servers from the restaurants I worked at, tend to be very irresponsible with money and can't make it through the ebb sometimes so they get mad.  :ilold:

The whole tipping system is BS.  I tip well, but it always bothers me that restaurant owners expect customers to subsidize their employee wages.  It's like a hidden tax on your food that only people with a conscience pay.  This allows the menu prices to be kept artificially low.  This would not be acceptable in other industries.  For instance, imagine that your water heater is busted.  Now imagine that "everyone knows" that water heater installers get paid minimum wage for an essential job.  Would you then be obligated to tip the installer?  How much? What about the mail-man?  would it be ok, for the post office to pay minimum wage, and expect the public to tip the mail-man out to make up for it?  It's all a way to keep menu prices artificially low by hiding a portion of the price as tips.  Fuck That.
Raise the goddamn menu price, and pay your fucking employees right.  No more tips, no more relying on tips.

I think he's meaning without the incentive of providing good service in hope of a good tip, the service wouldn't be as good. If they're getting paid a full wage, they can be as short or absent as they want, because they're getting paid the same amount either way.

if servers get paid minimum wage then there's no incentive to do more than the bare minimum. I thought it was pretty self explanatory

not always, I wored for a mexican place in atlanta for about 3 months, I was
paid minimum wage and tips that I made, the waitresses didnt tip out the the
bar staff, it was the same at the Acapulco Bar and R&R USA, both in buckhead,
althose at those two I wasnt paid minimum wage but it didtn matter, I made bank

i guess that could happen, but no more than in any other job.  If i go do a shitty job installing a bathtub, i get fired and replaced by someone who won't do a shitty job.  wouldn't the same be true of servers who give shitty service?

I thought my post was pretty self explanatory, in that i never advocated for paying servers minimum wage.  What i said was that Restaurant owners should raise prices to reflect the true cost of employee wages, and then pay the employees right in the first place, therefore negating the need for(or the uncertainty of) tips

nonsense, servers currently get less than half of minimum wage in most states,
they are encouraged to do more to boost the tips the expect, some servers make
more than $40k/year in tips

why should I tip if a server is making more than she is now, if she's an
exceptionally bad server then she clearly doesnt deserve a tip and probably
isnt worth minimum wage because bad servers cost a restaurant money

Not necessarily. It's more likely they'd just be bumped to the slower hours than outright fired for providing the bare minimum. You'd have to do a lot more than just not doing all you could to get fired. There's a difference between doing a shitty job and not going out of your way to do an excellent job. There's an in between where you're pretty safe from being terminated for it.

It's always annoying to hear people bitch.

If a waiter is in the dinning room, talking to another waiter about tips, I find it extremely inappropriate. You can bitch all you want in the back, but make sure customers don't here you. Always look and act your best around customers.

I had a stepmother that waited table in a fancy greek restaurant. She worked from 9AM to 11PM (double shifts) a few days a week. She pulled in on average between 500$ to 1000$ per shift. She made between 100k to 150k waiting tables... Then again, you couldn't eat at this restaurant for under 200$. Add a bottle of wine and suddenly your tab is 400$... Tips ad up pretty fast. The most suprising thing was that the restaurant had like max 10 tables... Maybe even less. There was like 4 waitresses only and 2 chefs.

Rich people. Gotta love em

I almost never tip servers unless they've done an exceptional job. Then again I live in Canada and I know for a fact they're already being paid a fair wage. The ones I do tip are delivery drivers and cabbies since they deserve it. Car upkeep and fuel put a major dent in their wage.
