Cracking pipe... update

I have a nice pipe with a nice crack. What can I do to stop the crack from growing?

Nothing realy. sometimes you can stop a crack in glass by scratching a lperpendicular line at the end of the crack. This relieves the stress at the leading edge of the crack. works with metal too if you drill a hole at the leading edge.

I'd say your pipe has any where between 6 months and a couple years. Use the time wisely! Live, dammit! LIVE!!!!!!!

So... lemme see if I get this right.

In theory, an experienced blower could torch the crack and cool the pipe in an oven.

If all goes well, the pipe would be fixed?

Is this unheard of?

man, i still have a whole pile of glass remains that I'm saving in case I happen to meet someone who is willing to fix my shit. Every time I ask one of my friends that blows they just try to get me to buy new shit. They don't understand the sentiment!

but yeah, I think fixing broken/cracked glass is a risky proposition anyway. Seems like a crack would be pretty easy though, but I've asked quite a few blowers and no one is willing to do it.

Yeah... I'm trying to contact the original blower... see what he thinks.

For me it is more than sentiment.... this wasn't a cheap pipe.

Perhaps you could relieve the stress by letting it sit in an over cranked as hot as possible. Through a cleaning cycle maybe? It is cracking because of uneven stress in the glass. It should even out if you can get it hot enough evenly enough.


You could try injecting super glue into the crack but I wouldn't smoke out of it after. (actualy I probably would but that is because I'm stupid)

that crack isnt all that bad. you shouldnt have any problems unless it begins to stress some more. keep an eye on the crack, but i dont think its that big of a deal. also i wouldnt try heating the glass up and trying to fix it yourself.... thats just silly man, cause for one you need to know what your doing and for another you would have to cool the glass back down with a kiln. never try to heat up and cool down glass. you will break it cause it needs to cool down at a certain temp.

just smoke out that pipe and leave no room for concerns. anyhow theres more pipes out there you can get if that one says goodbye.

oh checkout a friends pieces. my friend who tells me of these sort of things. im knowledgable in glass to a minimum(whatever i am told by my glass blowing buddies).

go to an autobodu joint, tell them you need a drop of glassmechanix resin on your glassware, it should cost you a few bucks, they might do it for free. all better. it will fill the crack, sealing it permanently

Update, I talked with the blower's company and I can send it in for repairs.

I just need to clean it. Rumsfield and all...
