what is the actual benefit to the keystone XL pipeline

The Republicans are just dying to push this through.  Cool.  But what's the benefit?  Seems like there would be maybe 20 jobs created (WOAH) and the Canadians would get the benefit by being able to flow their oil through the pipeline to refineries in the south.  The Democrats claim that it is environmentally questionable and it is a reality that pipelines do leak.  The Republicans claim that would never happen even though that has happened and claim jobs would be created, but leave out the part that not many would.  I have even seen arguments that this would raise the price of gas in the northern states as with access to the southern refineries, the Canadians would get a much larger market.  Seems like the Republicans love Canada.  Thoughts?

Getting it to the ocean/refineries where it can be shipped and distributed more easily is my guess.

If it's built it will increase supply of oil to the global market. Of course we have already crashed 50% in the last 6-7 months. Flooding global supply will effect countries all around the world.
Lower oil prices are a stimulus to economies that already use a lot of oil like the US but it will fuck some countries like Iran and Russia that depend a lot on their oil production (well more Iran than Russia) and will suffer if one of their important industries is all of a sudden much less profitable.

This pipeline will only make it easier for canadians to sneak in this country. It's disgusting. I can't even get a job because the canadians are taking them all.

How do you figure  it will effect Rusia  they have possibly the largest oil reserves in the world. Canadian oil reserves may rival that the bottle neck that occurs with the US's refining capabilities So yes the Keystone pipeline is economically viable If the US fucks around to much China and other up and comers can write their own ticket so to speak. They can circumvent the US by dealing direct with Canada.


I'm pretty sure that they would foot the bill to the Maritime provinces. Forget about crossing the Rockies and the Sierras. Most of the maritimes have the capacity to Move that oil. Just plain more cost effective. If the US doesn't ok the Keystone it's a sellers market.

As others have said, it would be a very good move for the US for far greater reasons that just creating more jobs. However as for as jobs go it would make a lot more than 20 jobs. It will allow the U.S. to remain more economically stable, and take business away from enemies of the U.S.

Yeah, it has nothing to do with keeping the U.S. a powerful nation..
I do agree though that they do probably benefit themselves also

I don't agree w/ this assessment. After its refined it goes to the free market. Why can't Canada refine its own Shale?

SteelPanther you've got some good talking points but I don't think you're right.

Yeah, what I've heard so far:

(1) It's better to suck Canada's dick than the Arab world's dick. 
(2) It creates less jobs than a Walmart.
(3) American refineries would be the ones refining.  Too bad those same refineries are almost certainly paying almost nothing in taxes.  :lolsy:

I really don't know if I'm right, I'm open to hear contradictions. Even though its still canada's oil not ours it seems like it will still influence the market in our favor, since it seems like it will equate to more oil from the west, giving the east less power.

Ever since 2008 there was only 5 jobs available in the US. Every illegal Canadian managed to get a job. All 4 of them.
