Capacitor for blower motor

Can I use a capacitor that is larger than what the motor calls for? I have to run 4 separate speeds to figure out what setting will achieve laminar flow but each setting calls for a different capacitor. I'm electricity illiterate so sorry in advance if this is a dumb question.

Yes, a bigger cap is usually ok, but make sure it's a motor capacitor and it is rated for at least 1.5 times the voltage the motor runs on. Also, is it a starter capacitor or a running capacitor? The latter needs to deal with a much higher permanent current and will usually be bigger and more expensive.

Also make sure you use an AC capacitor and not one only appropriate for DC (such as an electrolytic capacitor).

This is what I'm working with here. I sourced the motor and the capacitor from a maintenance shop that deals with repairing furnace fans/motors.

I also have a 25 mFd run capacitor as well.

I missed that bit about attempting to get a very specific amount of airflow in order to achieve laminar flow (through what? it must be something very smooth in order to allow for truly laminar airflow). Can't you just vary the airflow with a valve? It's much more intuitive, quick and continuous than trying to vary the fan speed with this particular fan.

Edit: also, 25mfd is quite far outside the range of your motor. Something like 12 would be fine, but 25 may be a bit on the big side.

Well, I'm planning to build a flow hood/box and I was going to mount the motor and play around with the motor speeds/intake until I achieved laminar flow through the HEPA.

Ah. In that case, you'll want to err on the small side, as the stronger the airflow, the more turbulent it will become as it encounters objects. But like I said, try varying the airflow with a valve. Also, try to find a capacitor that matches the motor within a more reasonable range, because 150% overcapacity is a bit too much.

What do you mean by controlling the air flow with a valve?

And I have a 7.5 mFd cap as well so I guess I'll use that and run the blower on the lowest speed.

Make an air duct with e.g. a butterfly valve to partially block the air flow. Do this before the filter and you can control the airflow through the hood. Or wouldn't that work?

I suppose this would work, but couldn't I just block the intake portion with stacked pre-filters until the desired air-flow is achieved? Ideally, I'd like to use a 24"x18" HEPA

Yeah, that should work just as well too - and provide additional filtering, increasing the lifespan of your HEPA filter.
