Chemistry Class
    #20805504 -

I'm taking a chem class this spring that includes a 3 hr a week lab. We will be studying atomic and molecular structure, periodic table, states of matter gases, solutions, energy changes, acids, bases, equilibrium, and nuclear chemistry. I'm so fucking excited. Anyone else take a chem class in college? Sure, I dont need this class to graduate but I love to grow plants and make extractions!

:awethumb:

maybe I will learn on a better scale of how making hash, salvia extract, and DMT extraction works. Maybe I will take the organic chem class next semester to get a real good understanding of how these processes are working.

You won't learn any of that but u will learn some chemistry
Next chem class organic chemistry will teach you some more of that or at least the concepts

Yeah general chem usually sucks ass. Organic is fun as shit though.

Oh, well I have to take the gen chem class to be able to take the organic class. Still seems like it will be exciting instead of just studying business, accounting, and communication all the time.

What did you guys do in your gen chem class labs? It's like over 40 hours of lab experience for the semester.

you may learn some useful-ish principles for doing extractions... but you won't really be into the real deal until ochem

I love growing things, and I love making things. I will always prefer drugs I have grown or made myself to those I have bought; the challenge of the manufacture makes the product all the sweeter.

Bucket list of drugs to produce:

Low tier: Cannabis, Caapi Vine, Chacruna, Coca, Ephedra Distachya, Kratom, Mimosa, Morning Glory, Opium, Psilocybe Galidoi, Salvia, Syrian Rue
Mid tier: Crack Rocks, Ephedrine, Freebase DMT & 5MeO-DMT, Freebase Mescaline, Peyote, Peruvian Torch, Psilocybe Cubensis, San Pedro, Tar Heroin
Top tier: Amanita Muscaria, Cocaine, Crystal Meth, Pan Cyans, Psilocybe Azurescens, Synthetic DMT & 5MeO-DMT, Synthetic Mescaline, White Heroin
God tier: Lysergic Acid Diethylamide

Okay. From my understanding, the gen chem class is for preparation for the organic chem class. At least thats how my college puts it. How is organic chemistry? Did anyone enjoy the class or labs. I'm so excited for the labs, I never get hands on learning at school.

I did not take any applied sciences courses in college as I pursued literature and writing, but I remember loving physics class in high school and I scored really high grades.

What I never understood is that I always sucked the big one in mathematics, if I did not fail a test I would barely get the passing grade, but I was a top-grade student in physics and chemistry.

Kind of like Einstein.

What I did in my gen chem labs were:
Practicing safety in chem lab
Bunsen burner and glass working
Measurements
properties of gases
determining boiling point of liquid and melting point of solids
chemical and physical properties of a chemical substance
specific heat of a metal
empirical formula of magnesium oxide
determining percent water of unknown hydrate
stoichiometry
determining molar mass of volatile liquid
ionic reactions
titration of HCl and NaOH

I'm taking Ochem and a 5 hour Ochem lab right now, took Gchem last year.
Ochem labs are a lot more directed and specific than Gchem labs were. General chemistry labs nearly all involved some form of spectroscopy for me. A lot of it was more about learning the techniques than actually thinking about the chemistry. A lot of the labs will have you do several somewhat unrelated things each week.
In organic lab, the experiments are more like extract compound A from source 1 via distillation, and from source 2 via extraction, compare the results using thin layer chromatography. All of the pieces fit together better and there is one distinct purpose for the lab.
As far as the class sections go, general chemistry teaches you all of the things that you need to know for any type of chemistry, i.e the basics. Organic chemistry is much more fun and interesting in my opinion.
One of my professors once told our class last semester that nobody likes gen chem, and not to worry if you don't like it. Regardless of whether you are interested in organic, inorganic, computational, theoretical, or physical chemistry, according to him, nobody enjoys general chemistry, but it's just essential to learning everything else

This is an extreme misconception about einstein, he was incredibly gifted at math to the point that he had to take classes outside of his school curriculum to pursue his interests.

Blackhawk summed it up well, with a few exceptions here and there depending on your professor 's field of interest.

General chem doesn't get into extractions or photosynthesis and the krebs cycle which would be geared more towards OP's interest.

However you do learn fascinating concepts, one of my favorites was entropy and enthalpy in gen chem, but not a lot of practical applications for those concepts until you dive into the more advanced courses.

yeah, i've taken a year of general chem and it was rough. you only touch on those things, you don't really go too deep down the rabbit hole. can't wait to take ochem next fall (it's a fall only class unfortunately). you have to take a year of general chemistry before you can take ochem, at least that is how it is at my school and probably a lot of others.

Same. I have also had almost every adviser tell me that the lower level classes are more difficult then the higher up classes b/c the lower class are so general while the higher up classes or way more specific and easier.

If you thought general chem was difficult you are in for a shitload of hurt with organic

I'm excited/ Maybe I will actually be challenged with something. I need to be challenged or I start to die inside.

You say that now but wait until you actually get into it. You can follow the procedure perfectly and still not synthesize the correct compound which leads to extra frustration and extra time spent in lab.

Yeah, but I like it when things fuck up. I get more curious about what is going on. I'm a natural problem solver. Like, I was that kid always playing puzzle games in school.

Mhmm, well I thought I was the same way before Calc 2 and O-chem. If things don't work out for a puzzle you can just try another piece instead, same goes for notes in music.

In chemistry and math you have to go back to the beginning and repeat it in its entirety until you get it right.

At that point you're not getting curious, you're getting frustrated when it doesn't work out after multiple attempts.
