When do you think Agnostics/Atheists will be a majority
    #20730659 -

We are probably in a great decline in belief in god(s).

The US, historically, tends to be a little behind Western Europe when it comes to major country changes like outlawing slavery, providing health care to all their citizens, etc. So I think we are about 50 to 100 years behind W. Europe when it comes to belief in God(s).

The latest polls show about 70-75% of the nation is religious.

While most of the richer economies in Europe have rates under 40%:

So to me, I'm thinking a good 50 years until surveys in the US show 40% believe in God, while in W. Europe the numbers will continue to shrink towards zero.

Then again, the US has lots of small towns, farming communities, hill billies, etc. Have you driven around in your state outside of the suburbs/major cities? Straight hill billy uneducated superstitious hyper-religious morons everywhere (where do you think the Republican Party gets all their votes from?!?!)...

i think it just depends on how everything goes, how most peoples quality of life ends up, it's tough to tell though fully i think, people can call themselves atheist or christian or buddhist or anything, a lot of the time they might not even truly believe or even understand it and are going for it to follow their personal herd or whatnot else, but that cant be known easily how many do that so cant really account for it.

mostly a matter of wellbeing, i notice the more problems and difficulties and such that are present the more likely religion is to be embraced, the less of them and the more equal and well and this and that a group is the more likely they'll be to embrace atheism. when people are in a bad way they want a god to save them, when they're in a good way they want to pat themselves on the back and say they did it all themselves, whatevers true is regardless but still how it tends to go.

if america overall is on a 'good' path in terms of mosts happiness then i agree probably within the next 100 years, maybe far less, but if it goes in a decline in those terms i think religion will shoot back up.

I think that in the coming decades there will be increased controversy over religious and spiritual topics, possibly with atheism gaining support for a while but soon after belief in God (or whatever form of spiritually is most trendy at the time) will expand exponentially as higher levels of spiritual awareness become more and more mainstream and widespread.

To be fair, the higher the levels of spiritual awareness the fewer people will identify with mainstream Christianity, which is not at all spiritual and is rotten to the core.

You are entitled to your opinion, but that has not been my experience at all. I have encountered a great spiritual richness in the traditions, rituals and sacraments of the Holy Roman Catholic church, for instance.

Now I realize the church is far from perfect but to say that it is not at all spiritual is rather absurd. How can any tradition rooted in sacred scripture not be spiritual? Have you ever studied sacred scripture? It is extremely spiritual.

Pretty much anything that reminds of the truth, that we are spiritual beings and the material comforts of this world that our society is so focused on, are all passing away before an eternal reality, is spiritual, even if the priest or pastor kinda sucks, heck even if a few of the priests fell into grave sin and molested little children, it doesn't mean the religion overall is not spiritual.

Anyway, in my opinion the purest and highest form of Christianity you can still find in a church today is actually not Catholocism, but Eastern Orthodoxy. They are very similar but in my experience, Orthodoxy is more spiritual, whereas Catholocism is more intellectual. If you are interested in real Christianity and wish to discover it's true meaning and power, I would recommend you study Orthodoxy.

What about Gnostics?  They would seem to me to be the most spiritual from what I've read.

Yes, that may be although, I don't know about you but in the town where I live there are four Roman Catholic Churchs, one Eastern Orthodox church and zero Gnostic churchs.

There are some gnostic churchs around today, or churchs which call themselves "gnostic" , just like there are Old Catholic churchs and liberal catholic churchs and various other small Catholic movements which are NOT in communion with Rome. But you would need to be extremely lucky to have one of these churchs near you. If you want ancient Christian truth teachings, then your nearest Orthodox church is probably the easiest place you'll find them, and trust me, these teachings are good (at least from the perspective of my soul and many others, they may not be relevant for you).

The trend is pretty clear. American baby boomers are starting to die, and their kids like church even less than they do. Catholicism continues to become more unpopular, within and without.

Islam is growing though. But as it grows it will show its warts and spur secular liberals to become less complacent about religious influence in our laws.

Canada is where the US will be in a couple generations. Our politicians don't mention God anymore -- it's too embarrassing and costs them points. Scandinavia is now where Canada will be by then.

Perhaps we will get lucky and people will stop self identifying so darn much.  Less people going, "I am this," or "I am that," and more people going, "Hmm, maybe instead of calling myself this or that I should just follow my inner guidance and live my life without putting myself into a slot.  Let me just be myself, whatever I am."

Of course that's probably a pipe dream.  Religion is on the wane, and realistically many folks with a need to walk around going, "I am this," will likely default to the other end of the spectrum where the tendency to self identity is almost as strong.

I mean Athiesm is practically becoming it's own religion, attracting people with almost militant opposition to anything too far removed from current scientific paradigms. Some Athiests would probably be burning religious and spiritual folks at the stake if they could get away with it.  "No my religion is right and yours is wrong!!!"

What is the matter with keeping an open mind?  I mean it's not like you need to define yourself so rigidly in order to eat, work, screw, and otherwise live.  Such aggressive self identification is really a result of a mind that cannot feel comfortable until it has everything put in slots, including its self.

What I've heard from Marko's etc. around Gnostics makes me think I'd have likely found a permanent home there had the regular christian faiths and their followers not turned me off for good.

I don't need a church. I need some truth and a history of nonviolence. Something traditional Christianity has not been about in spades.

I have my own spiritual practice and church within my own mind and heart and it's much more believable to me than what a bunch of imo mostly  dysfunctional crazies have come up with.  :satansmoking:
