I'm with him on this.

I used to be all proud about being able to label myself a drummer/pianist/photographer/gardener.

But now when people ask what I do, or 'who I am'; I just say I'm human.
And it usually catches them off guard.

This is basically my sentiment. I had no issues with what she was saying about not referring to herself as an African-American, because I get that. I understand where she's coming from. I've met a ton of black people who were very sensitive to the label and didn't like being called that, either, as their place of origin was not Africa .

And not wanting to refer to herself as such doesn't erase the fact that literally everyone else is. Nor does it separate her from the black experience. <<That is what I believe upset so many black people. But whatever. It really is not relevant to me. It doesn't directly affect me (or anyone that isn't Raven, honestly).

No, I do not agree.

Labels and stereotypes are convenient when referring to populations of people.

But when you're addressing an individual, it's unnecessary and retroactive.
It keeps you from seeing the real person you're presented with.


And most people are an exception to the rule, in some form or another, so thinking in absolutes with "labels" and their "roles" limits your perception of reality.

Bullshit.  It is not unnecessary or retroactive in the instance I gave earlier if she were my missing roommate and the police wanted relevant info to help find her.  It would in fact be necessary and proactive.

I disagree.  This isn't about not seeing humans as people at all, this is about people being overly sensitive and disregarding something that is the basis for what we are and how we perceive our world simply because they have a bug up their ass about it.
